As you may or may not know, a team of 5 cachers got together in 2005 to make a Georgia geocoin. Geocoins were in the infancy of their life at that time. We decided to make a coin a year for 5 years showcasing the 5 areas of the state . The first coin, 2005 showed the NW in the mountains at the gateway to the Appalachian Trail.
2006 was the Atlanta area showing Stone Mountain. For 2007 we are doing the Lowcountry. It is our intention to use the Tybee Lighthouse as the primary image on the 2007 coin. We are asking for the input of the Lowcountry cacher for this project. Do you have any pictures of the lighthouse area that you would like to share? Do you have an idea what angle it should be viewed. Any ideas on other iconic areas of the Lowcountry? PLEASE share them here or to save the GGA bandwidth email GA Cacher at tom.SPAMgacacher@gmail.com just remove the SPAM. Thanks in advance for your interest and help. Just a bit of history before the flaming starts. There was 5 of us that came up with this idea during cache runs and lunches. There was no mass market for coins at that time. A few areas had put a "state" coin out for their community. We contact the GGA and they didn't want to make a coin at that time.So we made the coin. So we are considered by the Geocoin community as the producers of the Georgia State Coin. We have made a donation to the GGA in money or product each time. The first was not trackable on GC as it wasn't allowed at that time. 2006 was trackable as will 2007, 2008 and 2009. BTW we also made the Georgia Micro Geocoin to fit in film canisters. I'll check with my wife's Aunt and Uncle to see if they have anything. They used to live on Tybee.

I've got some pictures, or can go get some. I think a classic view of the lighthouse is from the beach - you can see the dunes in the foreground and the lighthouse in the back. My email is parker313 gmail if you want to email me, I'd be happy to help you however I could to get just the right picture

I have some pictures of the Tybee lighthouse that I will send. Plus I live about 7 minutes away.

Thanks for the email, this is a great idea. I don't have any decent images of the lighthouse but can probably get out there soon and snag a couple if needed. What kind of timeline are you looking at? |

I have plenty of other Tybee Lighthouse photos, but they're all artsy type shots. The one I posted is the best shot I have of the entire lighthouse. If you want the others, I can send them to you... you can also right-click them off gather.com too.

Dern, I'm terrible at this forum stuff.
Anyway, as a Savannah cacher, I'm good with any of Georgia's remaining five lighthouses. Tybee's is probably the most picturesque, and AG's photo captures the essessence. There is not a good way to get the Tybee's lighthouse, the beach and the ocean in one shot except by air. Saint Simon's is another good lighthouse, but maybe not as distinctive as Tybee's. Personally, I like Cockspur Lighthouse best but that is from memories of swimming to it. Also, when you think about "coin art" Tybee's would probably translate best to the amount of space you have on a coin and the amount of detail you can shown - i.e. the black and white would look good. Anyway, that's my few thoughts. Tom, I hope it helps. Cheers, john (aka Johann Panholtz) oh, and how do I order one of these things? |

That's a cool shot John!
I'm planning on heading out to Tybee on Monday, I'll get as many shots as I can. I think that from north beach I can get the shot I have in mind. |

Thanks John, When we go to production (soon) and we have the coins in hand, we will offer them here in the GGA forums to let GA cachers have the first shot at getting them. People will have to have a GA mailing address to et them. After a week we will then offer the coins on the GC forums to open them to all. |

I headed out to Tybee this morning - it was gorgeous out there!! I went to north beach and started at the southernmost walkway over the dunes (actually, the first few shots are from in front of Ft Screven). Went north along the dunes and then came back over the next southernmost walkway.
Here are the shots I emailed to Tom: I had a blast - I just love going out to Tybee! |

Your artwork is cutoff for me. Can you repost the lighthouse side so I can see the whole thing?
Who is minting them? Coins for Anything again? |
