I am positively thrilled at the prospect of going to Savannah in November! The caches to find, the atmosphere to experience. Yumm.

I can't decide on whether to camp out or spring for a h/motel room. I'd prefer a nice little B&B over the usual fair of Marriott, Best Western, etc.

Y'all got any suggestions? Thanks!

As usual, I'm looking for a ride. So, presuming I can get there, I'm willing to spring for 1/2 the cost of a hotel room. BUT, ....ermmm....not being a 21st Centuary woman, I'd feel more comfortable sharing with a female cacher. (Sorry, Ed.) Email me through my profile if you have ideas on logistics. Definitely willing to share the driving and gas as well. I-16 is a L O N G boring drive.

We're working on arranging to stay with some friends while there. It comes in very handy to have friends scattered throughout the state!
Looking forward to the meeting.

What to do...what to do...? I think I might camp. Yeah, that'd be good. Did that last year and it was fun! Or, maybe just do the B&B thing. Marshall House looks good. Any of you locals have any recommendations? I know, none of you stay in a motel or B&B at home. Or do you? Fool Laugh

The three weeks thatve Ive been here I ahvent seen anything that has really struck me. Camping on Skidaway was fun. So any of you out of towners. Skidaway is highly recommended as is not to far from downtown.

Raskol and I are planning to come to Savannah. Is there any word on where the meeting will be held? Also, we're planning on staying Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, so anything upwards of $80/night is going to be too much. Any recommendations (Penny?) of places to stay or avoid? How is the neighborhood around the Mall or airport? Thanks!

Which Mall? Wink
There are plenty of motels along Abercorn. There is a Holiday Inn one block from the Mall. its pretty nice, said there this summer during orientation.
Im sure youll find something but knowing where the meeting is first would really help out with travel plans.

Sorry I haven't responded. My browser was hijacked (something I had never heard of, but apparently a common problem) and I spent the last week trying to regain control of my computer.

First, Savannah just isn't that big. (You'll be surprised at just how small it is). No matter where the meeting or where the hotel, you won't have very far to go. (Remember, I'm talking about Savannah, not the islands & beaches. Those are longer drives.)
Second, I'm not very familiar with the hotels downtown. But I think it is safe to say that any downtown hotels in good neighborhoods will cost more than $75 a night.
Any of the hotels along I-95 should be fine. But if I had to narrow it down to just one exit, I would recommend something at exit 94. (If you come in on I-16, go south on I-95 to get to exit 94 & GA 204) This is the exit nearest the Savannah Mall (& Bass Pro Outdoor World).

There are several hotels to choose from
hotels at I-95 & GA 204

And lots of fast food and full service restaurants (including the Shell House where we ate last year & Hooters where Rebel wanted to eat)
fast food and full service restaurants

And even a golf course
Henderson Golf Course

The nearest geocache isOde to OverRover

Well, we went ahead and sprang a few extra bucks and booked a room at the Historic Days Inn downtown just to be close to River Street and the downtown area. We plan on spending some time Friday exploring the squares and hitting the caches around there, then will branch out from there. Of course there's seafood on the menu at one of the River St. restaurants for Friday night, and I imagine we'll do our best to try to decimate the local oyster population. On the half-shell of course. After all, it is an "R" month! Thanks, Penny!

There are several REALLY GOOD seafood/steak places on River Street.
The Shrimp Factory
The River House
Tubby's Tank House
The Pirate's House
And More

As you can see from the menus, dinners start at $20+. I have only been to 2 of these restaurants. Both were very good and worth the price for food, atmosphere & location.

But there are two more REALLY GOOD seafood/steak restaurants just outside of town that are a little less pricey.

The Shell House is on 204 at I-95 and Love's Seafood is on US 17 on the Ogeechee River. I visit both of these restaurants as often as I can. We ate at Love's just 2 days ago. We had the REALLY HUGE combination plate for 2 for $38.
Both of these are family restaurants with mixed drinks available.

Please express your opinions for Friday night's meal here. Friday's dinner location doesn't have anything to do with the meeting location.

However, Saturday's dinner location would be nice to be near the meeting place (which I'm still checking into). I'll post more info here.

While the brie stuffed rack of lamb with melted leek galette and truffle infused mashed potatoes sound wonderful, I'm really a fried seafood platter kind of guy. I'll get the duck confit, beet compote and chanterelle kugel next time I go to NYC. Where do we get the $9.99 shrimp basket with hush puppies and an ice cold Bud?

That would be the Shell House

FYI as everyone tries to decide... Love's has more non-seafood items on their menu. The Shell House is almost all seafood.

I can find a meeting place near either restaurant. There is even a public covered area within walking distance of Love's. It's nothing special (like the pavillion in Daffin Park) except that it has a lovely view of the Ogeechee River.

For those interested in camping for the November meeting, the info is the same as it was when I posted this last year
camping info

Remember, November is still camping weather here in Savannah. It's cooler (but not cold) and the bugs aren't quite so ferocious as usual.

More FYI

Savannah has a new gambling cruise, the Millionaire's Casino.
The web site doesn't have much info except that the Saturday cruise if from 6pm-1am.
It costs $10 per person to board the boat.
There is a buffet from 5:30-7:30 (included in the boarding fee)
Other foods may be purchased a la carte (I'll try to get a menu & prices)
There are 3 levels (decks) for gambling.
There is live entertainment.
You must be 21 to board the boat.
It takes 1.5 hours to reach international waters, which is of course where the gambling is allowed.

Stay away from Love's FishCamp. Food is nasty, there are much better places in Savannah. They have been trading on their reputation for years.

Ertman, you are the first person I have ever heard criticize Love's. I personally think they are GREAT. (And I ate there just 2 weeks ago.)

Hey Penny, did you say you wanted the canoe trip to start at Morgans Bridge or at the old KOA?

I measured from Morgan's Bridge then I thought I remembered you saying something about parking at KOA.

That'll cut that trip in half if it's the old KOA.
