Haven't seen any traffic on our site recently. Anyway hope everyone is doing well. Ran into Pat2Run on Sunday. He found the cache at Sleepy Hollow for us. Very interesting site.
Now for the purpose of my message. What is a good local source for ammo cans? Are there 30 cal and 50 cal cans available? More than one source? Prices for each size? Doctor J and I are trying to get things lined up to start placing more caches around Augusta. Again, thanks for any info. Hope to meet up with more people on the trail.

Hey rootdoc, I'm not familiar with the Augusta area, but I'll wager you probably have Military Surplus stores around. If not try the bigger flea markets in your area. You should be able to find both sizes of ammo boxes for under $6.00 each, and I wouldn't pay any more than that. The Pendergrass Flea Market (GA's largest, supposedly) in Commerce, GA has a stall that is strictly military surplus and the owners have pallets of new ammo cans that we got for $3.00/ea. Good luck!

I have purchased ammo boxes at a gun & ammo store on Broad Street. I can't remember the name of the place, but it is located around 10th and Broad. I bought mine for about $4.00 I think.
Sorry for the delay in posting a follow up. I found some 7.62 mm cans at Sargent Major's Bunker on Lumpkin Rd. for $3.55 each. They also have larger 50 cal sizes for about $6.00. They seem to have a good supply of both sizes on hand. Doctor J and I are getting ready to start placing some more caches around the Augusta area. See you on the trail!!!!

Hi! from TX. I thought I would tell you about my recent ammo can experience. Someone on the Central TX Geocachers mailing list (on Yahoo! Groups) mentioned seeing an auction for a lot of ammo cans and wondered if anyone else would be interested in trying to snag some. To make a long story short, I ended up spearheading the acquisition of a lot of nearly 500 50-caliber ammo cans, including bidding, paying, and rounding up some cachers to drive an hour north of Austin to Fort Hood to pick them up. We had an event to distribute them. It was a lot of work, but with people getting the cans for $1 apiece, it was worth it! You might want to get a group from GGA together and try getting a lot yourself. Maybe from Warner Robins?

That's kinda what I thought too! LOL But after the auction ended and people found out they were going to be $1 or less, I was SWARMED with requests! We're even going to bid on another lot, this time 30-caliber.
Like I said, it WAS lots of work but we also had a BLAST. Even went and found a geocache that is out in the middle of the Fort Hood training area. What a TRIP! We even had two tanks following us down a tank track for a couple of minutes! WOWZER.

Was that an eBay auction or (more likely) a local military base auction? If it was a base auction, how would you find out about such an auction, for instance at Robbins Air Force Base?

The Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO) at Ft. Stewart auctions excess/surplus military equipment off on a regular basis. Local fire/EMS/police have first crack at the stuff for free, then it rolls over to a private contractor for disposal via auction. I believe these auctions are open to the general public. I have visited this place in an officical capacity and have seen rows and rows of pallets full of ammo cans in a variety of sizes. Not sure how one would register to bid, but if enough local geogachers would be interested, it may be worth the effort.
Looks like the above links are for a reseller. They probably buy this stuff by the pallet/lot/pound and re-sell it. Each base should have a DRMO. I know Ft. Stewart gets surplus from a variety of other bases as well.
Yeah a mass auction from fort stewart would be great. especially if it was in the next month as, cachers from Atlanta would be down here and could take a bunch back with them. Agent if you are base personnel could you look into finding out how to register to bid?
