Naming it has been discussed by the SC and I think that everyone will be happy.

As a non-SC cacher, I would be happy with this, as well and I hope it does not require a vote.
Cache, responsibly..... |

Any chance of this being a bit further north this year?? In the past it's been quite abit south. Need a good place with lots of room for all the POTS!!!
I, too, like the idea of making in Rebel's Honor. Good Stuff!!! |

I still don't have an answer since July 23!! I think some of us should go ahead a run with it, and make it happen. I am very willing to assist in putting together a cook off. Anybody else willing to pitch in? |

Of course there is going to be a chili cookoff. We are already discussing the location.
I like the idea of having it down in that area, especially with the tie-in of naming it and doing it in honor of Rebel this coming year. I cannot imagine the idea of having the event out of the area he frequented when we are trying to honor something he liked to do so much. It would be like having a memorial event to the World Trade Center somewhere in Nebraska. Going back to where it was the first year might be a great tribute to boot. We are looking into doing just that. |

Sorta like the Freedom Memorial in Columbus, Nebraska which features steel from the remains of the World Trade Center. The remains are the only ones left from the World Trade Center. They had a dedication event August 16, 2003. Edited to add link to picture of Memorial. This message has been edited. Last edited by: AllenLacy, ----- |

I didn't say memorial, I said memorial event. There are hundreds of individual memorials regarding the 9/11 attack, as shown in the 9/11 memorial sites waymarking category.
What I am talking is one like this one, held at the site. (Better link from that page goes to here.) This message has been edited. Last edited by: mtn-man, |

I think it would be nice to have this memorial event at the location that Rebel planned the first chili cook-off. That would be a nice full circle kind of thing. Plus that park had a really nice meeting place.
Then after this one it would be great to move the cook-off all over and give all sorts of cachers in this state the chance to show off their chili skills. The details are still being worked out for the February meeting. So stay tuned to this spicy thread for more info about the Annual Rebel Memorial Chili Cook-off Event! |

First I am not suggesting where the Chili Cook Off should (or should not) be held. But the "dedication event" description says among other things I believe the people of Columbus, Nebraska think they had a memorial event. But of course doesn't mean NY can't have memorial events for World Trade Center, and of course doesn't have any impact on where a Rebel memorial Chili Cook is held. I just thought it ironic that of the 49 states you could have picked, you pick the only one which has a memorial made of steel from the remains. ----- |

Actually what I'm interpreting from these post is that you (the sc) intend on having the Cook-off in Rebel's honor this next one time. I believe the event should always be named for him... seeing it was his idea, he did nearly all the work to put them together and he made it one of the most popular and looked forward to events.
But then I could be mis-interpreting things... |

There are many that have pieces of steel from the site. That's why I pointed to the waymarking category (which I help manage, by the way). This is one that is really cool, where one piece of steel stands alone, but there are an additional 343 pieces of debris buried at the site representing each fire fighter that gave their life that day. There is even one over in Alabama just before you get to Birmingham. There was a micro cache there, but it has since been archived. That is also listed in the waymarking category. This is a cool photo of one in Jacksonville. One of my favorites. |

Yes, mis-interpreted. It will always be a memorial event to Rebel. I can't imagine that the members would want it any other way. |

Glad to hear it! I couldn't agree more. Plus I just wanted to get it in writing. |

I feel naming the event after him is a great honor, IMHO.
I think keeping it in his "digs" is also important. To me anyway. Makes it very convenient to me as well. Christopher Men that don't know him won't like him and men that do sometimes won't know how to take him, he ain't wrong he's just different but his pride won't let him do things to make you think he's right.
