I've placed two new caches in McDaniel Farm Park (Duluth area). I actually had three ready to go, but lost daylight before I could get the third one stashed.

Old McDaniel Had a Farm

Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice

------------

Third one has been placed:

Snips, Snails and Puppy Dog Tails

------------

All three are pending approval from Dr. Mark Patterson of Gwinnett County Parks & Rec.

Huh???
Are all caches placed in Gwinnett County parks now going to require approval from Dr. Mark?

It would seem so... at least for NEW parks and those containing sensitive areas.

Although, for this one, Dr. Mark has refered me to Brent Walker who is the program supervisor at the park. I spoke with Brent, he was already familiar with GeoCaching and had just read the AJC article. He is okay with us putting caches in there, but wants to meet up so I can show him where the caches will be located.

As their hours pretty much reflect my own work schedule, I may not be able to meet with them prior to Saturday.

Dr. Mark oversees the larger "Regional Parks" like Tribble Mill, Yellow River, Little Mulberry, etc. He asked our group before presenting the last "Snake Show" that we run future caches in those parks by him. Since McDaniel Farm is much more than the aveage neighborhood county park with its sports fields and short walking path I thought it prudent to involve Dr. Mark. Looks like he does not consider caches there to be an environmental problem, but wants to be sure it's consistant with the other park uses. One of that park's primary purpose will be educating bus loads of school kids. Those that host the kids probably should be made aware of cache locations. IMHO

Update time:

I met with Joe Pruett (Brent Walker's assistant) to ensure that the cache placements were okay. To my surprise I found out that GPSFun had come by earlier to leave some additional surprise and had already shown Joe where they were. Joe did not have any problems with the cache placement locations.

So I now have the following:
Approval from Dr. Mark Patterson. (Contingent upon approval from the park supervisor, Brent Walker)
Approval from Brent Walker. (contingent upon location review from either he or Joe Pruett)
Approval of locations from Joe Pruett.

I've notified Erik of the approvals. Hopefully they will be on-line soon.

------------------

I also thought I'd share an excerpt from GPSFun's email to me. (I hope he doesn't mind):
"I visited McDaniel Park at lunch time on Thursday and ran into Brent Walker, the
park's program supervisor. During our chat, he told me there were caches in the
park awaiting approval.

Today I decided to drop some YJTBs into the caches so the early finders can have
a shot a them. While there, I encountered Joe, an employee who reports to Brent,
and I told him what I was going to do. Joe accompanied me, and actually found two
of the caches. I think Joe might become a geocacher!

I do not want to get into the middle of the approval process for your caches, but
Joe told me he thought the locations of the three caches were OK. Then, as we were leaving, Brent arrived, so I told him that Joe and I had visited all of the caches
this morning. Brent asked me if they were OK and I said that they looked fine to
me, but it was not my call.

One more thing. If anyone else should decide to place caches in McDaniel Farm Park, they can probably eliminate some of the run around by contacting Brent Walker and Joe Pruett directly at: (770) 814-4920.

Hey! I just wanted to thank you for placing these. I didn't plan on geocaching today but after I saw three new ones in one park I had to give it a try. I almost doubled my FTF count in about an hour! I didn't want to be too greedy so I only grabbed one of the YJTBs. I wanted other cachers to have a go at those.
It's good to see that Gwinnett county was able to preserve this area for a park. There's some fantastic history and nature here. I circled around and walked all the trails which is something I couldn't have done on a 90 degree day in July.

I took my kids out on Sunday and really enjoyed this new park. Thanks for the hides. It sure was great weather this weekend for some caching wasn't it! Thanks to WXRnot for leaving a Jeep for us to pick up as well. Nice job on being the FTF.
