I eat at the Woody's in Snellville ALL the time and I always take my WIFI laptop with me. They have a good 11.g connection that is totally free. Consider that location as confirmed.

JIWire lists Buffalos Cafe as having WIFI but none of the ones that I have visited have a connection.

Lenox Mall (near where I work)has two WIFIs: The Food Court (maintained by Jim Ellis car dealerships) and Panera Bread. I use both all of the time.

The central Buckhead area has a WIFA that is suppose to cover many city blocks. But I rarely have time to check it out. Maybe AndyManD could check on that one.

I keep the following on my laptop and it may prove useful:

Have you got coords for Woody's in Snellville, and the other sites?

I also have been unable to get signal at Buffalos, but I have never been inside and asked in case they don't broadcast SSID.

That Buckhead city block thing is bogus.
Andymand and I have not been successful at getting it to work.

Thanks for the list, but like I've said before, I can only add entries to the GPX file that are confirmed and that I have coordinates confirmed.

Thanks,
Kenneth

While these lists are all good and I appreciate sharing them, my purpose in putting a GPX file on the cache page was so cachers could load them up on their GPSr and see when they are near one so they can log caches and/or check email.

So if you get to one of those listed on the list provided and can confirm they have free WiFi, try to grab coordinates.

Thanks,
Kenneth

Kenneth, just so you know - I've confirmed both of the two I listed. The Joey's is right around the corner from my old building, used to eat there often. The Jersey Mike's is advertised, and I conntected to it from outside the building.

Since I work in Buckhead, when I saw the Six-block Buckhead wi-fi cloud listed on WiFi Freespot Georgia last year (since removed, I think), I almost (almost!) wet my pants.

After unsuccessful attempts to locate a coverage map, I contacted the outfit (Netconx) which allegedly created the cloud. Free Wireless Service in Buckhead - Press Release

The guy who replied said that they were restructuring the network and pointed me to three wi-fi hotspots. One was Moe's on Peachtree, another was some bar in Marietta or thereabouts, and I can't recall the other one right now.

After a few more e-mail exchanges, asking for details about the other spots, offering to help test, etc., I was left with the distinct impression that "restructuring the network" was just not a high priority for them.

So I'll echo Ken's comment; I regard it as totally bogus. Maybe it wasn't bogus at one point, but it is now.

I use a couple of tools (e.g., Changenotes.com and webmon) to watch for changes to WiFi Freespot Georgia. I also grab that page and Plucker-ize it to my Palm for quick in-the-field lookups. All that plus my having Ken's Wi-Fi GPX file loaded in my GPSr really stacks the deck in my favor of being able to find a relatively nearby hotspot when I'm out.

I'm not sure why I felt like I needed to ramble on here, so forgive me. Oh, yeah, now I remember, it's because I was ticked when the Buckhead cloud evaporated.

Later- AndymanD

Oh what the heck,
Since I am an RF Engineer and do WiFi engineering and installations, I'll weigh in and offer a little input.
There are several programs that will help you locate commercial hotspots, but if you are a purist (or in my case someone who needs to locate rogue access points) a nice little piece of freeware is Netsumbler. It'll alert you anytime it senses an 802.11g/b signal, and will tell you if the signal is WEPed. If it isn't, you can always piggyback on someone's open AP.
It is not illegal, though it might be considered ethically questionable, to "borrow" someone else's internet connection to check email or log a find. In my opinion, anyone who sets up an AP and then just leaves it wide open, probably won't mind if you piggyback on it for a few minutes provided you don't do anything illegal. Just use good judgement.

sparc77,

According to NetStumbler Thread Read This First it is illegal to connect to a wireless network that you are not authorized to use.

quote:
Connecting to a network that you do are not authorized to access, is ILLEGAL in most juridictions. In many places it is a felony, and may have associated mandatory jail sentences and fines.

I know they put that info on their site to cover their *&&^%s, but I think we'd like to do the same of not giving the nod to others that would get them in trouble.

Netstumbler only detects wireless networks presence passively.
You have to connect to the network yourself (unless you have XP...which is why I believe NetStumbler stops the Wireless Zero Configuration service when you start it).

Netstumber is a great tool and I use it myself when out caching.
But...if you'all want to use it to connect to unsecured networks, then just remember you do so at your own risk.

Kenneth

Hehe I use their quite often as well. The signal comes in very well from the parking lot. I use it as I back up when my home Internet connection is unavailable.

I have a stand for my laptop in the cache hunting mobile and use a program called Network Stumbler while I’m out driving to find open networks. (aka wardriving) In one day of caching I found over 1600 networks. The program also has the ability to receive info from your GPS and log where you were when you found each network. I have only tried that once though as Mapsource uses the GPS connection.

I don’t have a picture of it but I also have a Linksys Network wireless network adapter mounted in the cargo area for increased reception.

Kenneth is quite right that that disclaimer is totally CYA. That is because open access points are a favorite for villans who commit on-line fraud. The trace goes back to the AP and then stops there. However, to be completely acurate, the FCC and courts have ruled that when a person operates an open access point they are, defacto inviting anyone to use it.

That being said, I agree with Kenneth that if you choose to go that route, be advised that you may have to answer for it. It is not illegal to piggyback on an open AP, but the ethics of it are questionable.

Added both of these to the GPX file on the page.

My PocketPC will run ministumbler so it isn't like having to bring up a laptop.
I think AndymanD has WiFi on his Palm, but it doesn't always connect without some tweaking, so not best for verifying hotspots.

Thanks for verifying some NorthWest Atlanta metro spots.
If you get a chance to grab any others, then just let me know.
FYI that I built a GPX file with some addresses off the lists mentioned.
When in the area, I will treat them kinda like a cache hunt...try to find the signal and verify it.

Um... subtract the "Joeys" you just added. Frown

I went by there a couple days ago and happened to look over at the strip mall. Joey's is GONE. Don't know when it happened, but it had to be recent. It's just one of those things I took for granted; you see it every day. Sorry about that.

Removed it.
No problem.

Maybe they should have charged for the WiFi? Razz

I have a Palm Tungsten|C which has built-in WiFi (802.11b). I registered Netchaser which is very useful for spotting hotspots, connecting, and doing minimal surfing without having to boot up my laptop. If the hotspot has a registration/login page, then the T|C is not the best tool (what do you expect from a 320x320 pixel display?!) and it's time to break out the laptop.

So basically, I tend to use my T|C to identify a signal and then use my laptop for actual surfing.

(There's a free netstumbler-like app for the Palm called WifFi, but I didn't like it as much as I did Netchaser.)

FWIW, I'm not interested in finding out what the penalties, if any, are for tapping in to an unsecured network Geo-Cop , so I tend to stick with the published freespots listed in some of the pages previously mentioned in this thread.

Anyone familiar with Krystal’s having Open Wifi?

I noticed on Net Stumbler Last night that I found a network called “KrystalHotSpot” I circled back to see what sort of signal I could get but they had just closed. I did not pick up anything so they may turn it off at night. Woody’s However leaves theirs on all night!

Yea....I think it was mentioned in the logs of the cache.
I've known about them for a while.
I sometimes use the one in Norcross/Lilburn on Indian Trail near 85.

Their website has a list of spots that have WiFi: Krystal WiFi Locations

I've reviewed the thread and haven't seen anything nearby, so I figured I'd ask.

Does anyone know if there's wifi access in and around the Georgia World Congress Center? Seems as if it would be a likely spot to have it, but I can't find information either way.

I'm going to be there Sunday morning, but I need to be able to access the internet at noon. Wink

Thanks for any information that can be provided.

Well, it seems for pay you can use the services provided by the GWCC themselves: Amentities.

Nearby at the CNN Center you should find something.
In WiFiFreeSpot it says there is free service at Jocks and Jills and OMNI at CNN Center.
