If you have access to overlapping aerial photos in the areas you hike, If you have viewed aerial
photos in 3-D, and if you have a need to do this then the following is for you, and if not, read no further. I have an addiction to military surplus stores. There are only a few remaining. I have come across some Russian mirror stereoscopes for $40 at the Forest Park
store. These are brand new and are comparable to the Ben Meadows steroscopes that run from $740 to $1320. I bought mine to use elsewhere but I was playing around with my digital camera and took two photos of my back yard using a tripod and the camera was moved about three inches from one picture to the next. (the distance between your eyes). Voila! A 3-D picture under the steroscopes.Remember your old viewmaster?

Yeah, Viewmaster! Cool! Mine was made from bakelite or some other indestructable material. When we went on vacation all the tourist stores had displays of Viewmaster slides. I got one from Iowa with the state's featured scenery. There were only 2 pictures: a cornfileld and the state capital building.

My bad!
A stereograph is simply a simultaneous double-image of the same subject that, when viewed through a stereoscope like the one pictured here, appears to be one three-dimensional photograph.

I believe you are the proud owner of some digital maps you are using on your laptop. They were compiled by using this technology. The sereoscopes I am talking work on the same principle as phat's picture but are more sophisticated. Do a google search with these key words if you are interested: Aerial photography, photogrammetry, remote sensing, stereoscopic photograpy. By the way all the stereoscopes have been sold.

Is anyone else out there feeling reeeeeeeeallly old?

Reminds me of the time our neighbor's son asked why we had "those funny handles" on our car doors. He had never seen window cranks before!

Now, where's my walker...

Is like a Viewmaster?
That red thing that you pull the yellow lever and stare into the light?
If so I had one of those, several actually, never knew it was called a stereoscope though...

You don't want to see what's on the Alabama disc, it's not legal anywhere else. (Apologies to all my Alabama friends)

A stereoscope is similar to binoculars on a stick, with a double-image postcard you place immediately behing the eyepiece. When you hold it to your face you see 3-D. You have to switch out the postcard sized images one at a time. The cards are all over fleamarkets but the stereoscopes are more reclusive.
