That GPSMAP76Cx looks pretty good for $205. Anybody have one of these?

AtlantaGal has/had one of the color models. I have the GPSMAP 76, the old grey screen type.

Add this to the deals too.

I did check on Garmin's website, and some of older units without the "x" are being discontinued.

Well, I knocked another button off my 7 year-old GPS76 - more silicone glue will hold it for a while - but that was all the excuse I needed to get the GPS76Cx. Smile The closer was that the specs say it will work with either USB or serial cable and it comes with a USB cable. That should make it easy to load all my waypoints onto the new unit - I hope. Thanks for the heads-up John.

I see a lot of folks preferring the Garmin 76 series over the 60 series. I'm just curious as to why, if anyone would like to provide a reader's digest condensed version of the reason. For instance, is a pricing factor, a performance factor? Like I said, just curious.

I originally bought the GPS76 because it had marine features (tides, nav markers) and it had a reputation for very good reception even under trees. I found that to be true. I am staying with the 76 series because 1)I already know how to use it and 2)it fits in the GPS76 mounting bracket on my boat.

Since Tina is taking over my GPS (which I do NOT want to discourage in the least), I am considering the new Garmin Oregon. Those look really cool. I hate being a test subject, but what the heck.

Sweet, they take PayPal. That was all I needed. I just bought the 76cx to replace my late 2004 76c, which has some screen scratches and minor button wear.

I originally bought the 76c because at the time it had the most on-board memory available (114mb) and it was completely waterproof up to 3 meters (I believe). I thought that was a safe bet if I dropped it in a creek or something.

I'm sticking with this model because I already have the car kit, bike mount and a case for it. Oh and also because I really like it.

The 76Cx came today - its neat - but I have found a few things I don't like. Main thing is that the Bearing field displays N, S, E, W and not the bearing in degrees. I cannot find a way to set it to degrees. Surely there is a way?

Edit - I finally found how to set the bearing (and all other directional values) to degrees. I was on hold for the Garmin support site and found the solution while I was waiting. The layout of this unit is much different from my old GPS76 - this will take some getting used to.

On the positive side - the receiver on this baby is fantastic. It is getting 12 satellites right here at my computer - through the roof of the house! And it boots-up and locks-on really fast.

Now if I can just figure out what the Geocache function is for. I guess I will have to break down and read the manual - nah!

Mine arrived today Smile

Once I sit down and set it up Charlie, you might want to tell me where you found the place to switch the baring to degrees. Although, I think this is just like the unit I have in that regard. The geocache fuction gives you little cache boxes as the waypoint icons, doesn't it? It's been several years since I fiddled with mine. But I think it's the same except the Sirf technology.

Nice to have a scratch-free screen again.

Actually, nevermind Charlie. I'm told this is exactly like what I have and know except the sirf chip, memory card and the external antenna port.

UPDATE: It's all configured, software update installed and detailed maps for the entire southeast installed. Now I just gotta go find some caches this weekend and try it out Smile
