I suspect in time, probably very soon after it's offered for sale, that a hacker will remedy this situation. I'm using user-supplied software on my 60CSx that provides custom icons to caches (yellow smilie, blue frownie, single box, multi box, virtual ghost, etc.) but I have to have the caches loaded as waypoints instead of "geocaches".
I'm sure this will be done on the Colorado as well, but I'm not sure how this will affect the improved geocaching mode. Listing caches as waypoints instead of 'caches' will probably not allow you to see all that fancy 'cache info' stuff, so you'll still need the PDA. It would, however, allow you to see all caches on the map while navigating.

What I wondered, since the "geocaching" mode is driven by directly loading a geocaching GPX file, if I could use GSAK, or some other tool to produce a mapsource file with the geocaches as standard waypoints, then load the colorado with both the GPX file and the mapsource file. That way in navigate mode I could see the geocaching waypoints, then when I wanted to find the geocache, I go to geocache mode and have it show me the geocache information.

It would take more memory, but with price of SD memory going down it seems a decent way around the problem.

Or perhaps (this remains to be seen) Garmin has allocated more usable screen space to general waypoints as it has to "geocaches". You might be able to load one GPX file of waypoints, including all relevant info, and not ever need the "geocaching mode".

Per thread on groundspeak.
quote:
Here is what I was told today. The Garmin Techies had just come out of a Colorado meeting.

1) Memory cards: Max 4GB SD. This is not a micro SD and the Colorado does not currently support SDHC. Future versions may be able to support SDHC.
2) They are aware that the geocache icons are not showing up on the map overlays when caches are loaded via a GPX file. They will be working on a fix and hope to offer a Firmware update within the next few months.
3) They are aware that caches can't currently be marked as found. They will be working on a fix and hope to offer a Firmware update within the next few months.
4) They are already working on other Firmware updates to enhance the Geocache Mode.

I noticed this Garmin Colorado wiki which is the home of the Garmin Colorado FAQ and Issues List.

Battery life issues. Published factory specs "sitting on the sales counter" 15 hours vs anecdotal 2 hours "real life" battery life. Talk to the guys behind the counter at BASS PRO. They are saying the Colorado is eating up the batteries during demos, expect two hours of "real" battery life.

Has anybody documented this? I found factory specs of 15 hours quoted repeatedly, and one post from a user citing that the battery life is "not as published" yet they gave no quantitative value.

The Colorado Wiki Issues page has several entries about battery life.

Thanks ALlen for a link to a very informative article. I think I'll wait until Garmin works out the kinks before considering a purchase.

I know someone who's got one coming in the mail; Geo-Agent I'm sure he will post here & report its abilities/setbacks.

I don't know anything of their supposed issues, but after handling a couple of them in the Garmin store in Chicago, I thought it was a sweet piece of hardware. Not worth selling my 60CSx for it just yet, but still sweet.

In my humble opinion, HOLD OFF! I've had my 400t for about 90 days and am real disillusioned so far. It has some really neat features but lacks so much of the "mainstays" that I love with my 60CSx. I'm sure Garmin is addressing most of the issues and the software and firmware upgrades have already helped a bunch.

I got my 400t in the mail and had fifteen minutes to play with it. I was on the phone with Garmin when it started to heat up. It’s in the mail to them now for a replacement. In the fifteen minutes before it stopped working I got to explore the caching feature and the Colorado will make caching easier and eliminate the use of my PDA. The 3D Topo features will be a big benefit for me. Talking with others that just got theirs, even with the updates that are available, I see more in the near future, and with the little time I had with mine makes me stand next to the mailbox every day at 2:30.

LZ..Are the geocaches showing up on the topo map unless you go to that cache and ask to see it? That was an original limitation that I was hoping had been in fixes.

Yes, they are on the topo map. However I didn’t have the opportunity to download any of the upgrades.

Glad I'm just a poor ole working stiff that can't afford the 'latest and greatest'. Just read on TechWire that Garmin is having a devil of a time with overheating on the new Colorado. Looks like they are going to recall the ones that are out there, and give a credit until the 'newest' unit - 'Denali' is available. Said it would be about 4-6 weeks.
I'll hang on to my Vista - thank you!
