I found from another website that garmin nroute is now a free download. I have downloaded it and it seems Like a nice program if you use your laptop to navigate the voice prompts are nice. Just curious if anyone uses this program I have been using streets & Trips.
Here is link nroute

I thought it had always b een a free download?

I've got it loaded on my laptop but never use it. It's cool, but I'd rather just run my GPS off DC than burn the candle at both ends and eat the batteries up in my GPS *and* Laptop.

I've used it for quite some time when I'm in an urban area that's unfamiliar. Power is not a problem because I use the laptop plugged into an inverter and the GPS is a Legend C that is powered from the laptop's USB port.

Sometimes I use our older blue legend to drive the laptop via the serial port and that does use up GPS batteries but the Legend will run all day and more on a set of AA cells.

So far as I know, the download has always been free. It works fine with Streets & Trips.

Yeah, I think it has been free. Like you say, you have to have a Garmin Map program to use it. I use v8.0 too. I don't use it when caching personally because of my "hey look, a dot on my GPS" caching style. The Leprechauns and I used it up in Pittsburgh though, and it was pretty neat to navigate over to a park through some backroads.

Personally, I think its neat.

But I don't have an inverter for my vehicle and my Garmin GPS V is a serial-only port so it'll chew through batteries at it's usual ~20hr rate. Its also a matter of convenience. Its just easier to look at my GPS (sitting high on my dash) than it is to look across the truck at the laptop in the seat to see where I'm going.

Now, if it helps me beat Owl to all the FTFs in Marietta -- I'll adopt using it more often. Laughing

I have all of the map programs but find when using my PC on the road that it is hard to beat Microsoft's Streets and Trips. Easy to use and only cost $39.00 or less if they have a rebate going on.
Street and Trips gives voice commands, turn by turn and off route recalculations.

If not using Streets and Trips I have found that Garmins City Navigator works just find with not having to load/use nRoute on the PC.

nRoute has more information on the screen but that is more clutter when driving unless you have someone with you who can move around the screen for you.

It's a matter of degrees
