I've searched the forum but haven't seen this topic mentioned. My Palm T|X (and the T5 before it) is nearly impossible to read in bright sunlight, while my wife's Tungsten C display is very clear in daylight.
I had another cacher ask me about PDA's and want to give an educated answer. Nearly every PDA is capable of running CacheMate, but the displays vary from unit to unti. What PDAs do you use and what is their daylight visibility? Thanks! |

I've a Tungsten E and find it very hard to read in bright sunlight. FWIW

Palm m130 - hard to see in bright sun also ... but I still like it. Bought another one for my son.

Palm Zire. Not color, but easy to see in sunlight. I think the problem is that most mono LCD screens are reflective, so they'll work beautifully, but color need to be backlit. I know I have a similar problem on my phone... a Motorola RAZR that I can barely read the screen of if outside.

Palm Zire 71 (Color). Quite easy to read.

I'll second the Zire 71. I think color is easier to read than the non-color versions. I still love my 71.

I use a Sony Clie J35 for the last couple of years. It works fine in most any light including sunlight. But Sony got out of American PDA market and is no longer available here.

iPAQ 4155 with GPXsonar, iGuidance, and Pocket Streets. I also have Franson GPSgate, but rarely used it. I bought GPStuner and Vito Navigator II but don't use them since I got my Merigold, since my BlueTooth GPS had static navigation enabled.
Readability is fair, but not as good as a monochrome Palm. So I either cup my hand over the screen or angle it into the sun, and it gets the job done. If I do the latter, I turn off backlighting to conserve battery life. |

I've found that playing with the brightness level on the Tungsten E helps readability in the sun - setting it lower than maximum gets the best results.
It's still not the best though; I have to "cup" the screen with my hand sometimes. I'm waiting for Oakley to come out with the Pa-Thumps; you know, integrated mp3 player and palm, with the screen displayed on one of the lenses. Hehe.. |
