Hi all,

Our GPS (a Magellan - can't remember the model), is in the process of dying. Sometimes it receives satellites, sometimes not. So we're in the market for a new one.

Any recommendations? We aren't exactly "power users." We load in waypoints and go, so a lot of the super-technical stuff isn't a selling point for us. (Though we wouldn't be adverse to learning new features).

We want a nice, upper-mid-range GPS that gets good reception. A color map would be nice, but isn't absolutely necessary. We're not hard-over on Magellan vs. Garmin (and I don't want to start a Magellan vs. Garmin war). We've been looking at the Garmin 60CSX (I think that's what it's called), though we'd probably lean toward Magellan since it's what we're used to. But there's just a sea of data out there and a recommendation can go a long way!

For "generic" mid-to-upper handheld units, from the Garmin side you can't go wrong with the 60CSX. With the optional maps, you can do autonav with it, too.

If you're considering that unit, you can't go wrong. I can't speak to Magellans since I've never owned one...

I have the 60csx and boy howdy, I haven't been happier. This is my 3rd Garmin, and by far the easiest to use. I agree with Jason. But I'm sure the Maggie users have some input too.

I also own multiple GPS units and I vote for the GPSmap 60CSX. I have the 60CS the same unit without the memory card slot, I would love to have the extra memory on the CSX. The only other unit I would rather have would be the rino 530 if they add a card slot.

What model/firmware you using? I would like to try and help before you switch to "the dark side".

Personally I am looking at the DeLorme PN-20 and drooling but short of $$$. Magellan has gotten where there is no tech support and the software is tons more expensive than DeLorme's.

From reading the specs and for what you get for the $$ the new DeLorme PN-20 looks real good on paper. Not a lot of field usage yet so that jury is still out.

As far as Garmin, one of the big selling points for the 60Cx/60CSx models is that they use the newer ultra-sensitive SiRF chipset. You get great reception in almost any conditions (even in your house!) Heavy foliage is not an issue for these models.

I believe that the new DeLorme model also uses the newer ultra-sensitive chipset.

You can also save a few $$ by buying the 60Cx versus the 60CSx...the only difference between the two is that the 60CSx has an electronic compass & altimeter.

Our new 60CSX arrived yesterday! We're chomping at the bit to try it out.

Congratulations! Can we ask where you got it and how much it cost? One of these days I'll have to replace my antique Garmin.
