If you have ever looked at a pair of coordinates and wondered what the bearing and distance was between them or wanted to project a coordinate from where you are to another place knowing bearing and distance without using the cumbersome routine in your gpsr, this palm application is very good. It also does UTM to Geographic and vice versa. It is also unit friendly and can take bearings in dms or dd.dddd or ddd.mm.mmmm. The best thing of all is,it is free.http://www.freewarepalm.com/astronomy/navigate.shtml

Thanx for the memory jog. I have had this on my Palm since I did Starhopping, and forgot I even had it. It's a great program and you can't beat the price.
Might come in handy putting together my forthcoming 'Event Horizon'. |

I loaded it today. I like the fact that you can do projections in yards. Other than precision I'm not sure it's much easier than my GPSr.

I put Navigate on the Palm and tested it this evening. I tested results against an old Coast Guard DOS program (Posaid) and it gives the exact same results, out to many decimals. Since it will take decimal entries, such as small fractions of a yard, it is probably as precise as the input. This could be handy in those situations where you need the extra precision. Would be nice if it did magnetic bearings, but I don't think it does.

I loaded it last night and played with it. Not sure I understand the reason for being able to have seven default/preset locations, but I did change Abu Dhabi (I think it was) to my home location. Might come in handy one day to know how far I am from home, though my GPS would know that too.
It seems quite accurate, and it was neat to see if 1 nm = 1 min and 60nm = 1° of a change in latitude. Close.... ~erik~ |

I think this is because the world in not a perfect sphere, but an oblate spheroid (I think that's right?) because the spin causes it to bulge in the middle. From my experience, its age and beer that causes bulge in the middle. FWIW, CharlieP Searched my link list and found this: lat long length |

Make sure to select the correct geodesic WG84. The preference navigation isn't obvious

quote: No kidding. The "help" function says the default datum is WG84, but I don't understand how to change it if I wanted to. ~erik~ |

To verify/set the datum, click on Navigate, then Edit|Preferenced.

It didn't help me any, but I did find a Windows program that helped on one of them

Erik, Given that you already found all of them, I doubt this program will help
