I've been trying to upload a track from my GPS to my computer and then show that track on a street or topo map.
So far I've only been able to upload waypoints & routes. But I want to see the actual path I walked on a map. Does any one know how to do this?

That sounds like an Allen Lacy question. Wink

I have a Garmin GPS and the Garmin Topo software and haven't had any trouble transfering a track from the GPS to the map on the PC screen. With another mapping program there may be impediments to doing this, though.

Well since I don't know what part is giving you a problem. I will cover several things.

Since I know you have a Garmin Rino, I am going to assume you have mapsource. The first thing is to make sure the GPS is set to record tracks. I don't know where that setting is on a rino, on GPS III and V it is on set up. There you need to turn it on. There is also is a setting of what to do when the track memory is full. One setting is to just quit recording, the other is to just wrap i.e. when memory is full delete the oldest point in the track to add the newest. If you either don't have tracking on or have it set to quit recording once it is full you will not get a useful track. If it is on mapsource will read it in and display it on what ever maps you have for mapsource. I also use Delorne Topo USA 3 which will read in waypoints, routes and tracks. This Chimney Cap log shows the track up the mountain and the trail profile. ThisNeel's Gap to Hogpen Gap log just shows the trail profile. The September GGA Meeting log has a wide view of our trip there.

These were created by have TOPO USA read in track logs.

OK, I guess the problem is the program I'm trying to use. I have MicroSoft Streets & Trips. It will accept waypoints & routes from my GPS, but it doesn't read the tracks. (I have the GPS set to wrap, and I saved a couple of tracks just to experiment with.)
So I think the next step is ask everyone for opinions of the different programs.
Thanks!

Those maps are great! (And the white squirrel is pretty awesome too!)

I have downloaded a freebie program called g7towin which will download tracks from the GPS, save them, and also send them into Street Atlas. It is fun to see where I have been relative to streets. It is also fun to see all the stuff that is recorded with the tracks, time, altitude, etc.

FWIW,

I downloaded that this morning and was able to send a track to Microsoft Streets & Trips. Of course it wasn't as nice as the maps Alan linked to above Smile
That program also let me save a screenshot as a bitmap (something that comes in handy for making presentations or handouts).

But the thing that got me started trying to upload track information was this site..
You can upload a trek and the site will place it on a picture or topo map. It also analyzes various factors such as calories used, altitude changes, etc.

On the free membership, you can only upload & store 1 trek at a time.
