Subtle? Discrete? What's that?

This is only one solution of many.
If you are using a vector-based drawing program (like Illustrator), you create your curve/line, and on the Text portion of the toolbar, you should have an option to cause the text to follow a line. If you hover over the icon for a moment, you should get a brief description.
Photoshop may or may not have that option- I tended to use Illustrator for most of my text manipulation.

If the program you have doesn't support it, there is a freely available one at http://www.inkscape.orgI've used it on linux, and I know there is a windows version available.

. . . without a cache.

Lots of bourbon. Shine works too. It also depends on your vendor. Some do the final artwork for you and will even accept hand drawn (and scanned) copy to make the final. Ya don't have to be an art major. Heck, I can't draw a straight line with a ruler and the 2005 GGA coins came out great!
