I don't get this pocket query thing at all. I've given the computer some parameters for one, and I can't figure out how to "save" it, or if I even have something to save? Anyone feel like being my mentor on this? I've got a Palm V and I just want to load the pages into it so I don't have to carry paper with me. I don't need to connect to the gps -- yet. With time, maybe I'll be able to do that. Right now I just want to come to understand the individual steps and get past feeling stupid because I can't even do the first step! Geeeesh! brownthrasherNOSPAM@bellsouth.net and I'll give ya my phone number so we can do it in real time.
YES, I HAVE READ THE DIRECTIONS that mtn man put up. If I understood what they said, I'd do it. *********** Anna Just because you know the latitude and longitude, doesn't mean you know where you are! |

I just went through going paperless and it really is relatively painlessas well. I wrote a two page Word document on how to do paperless with a palm PDA and Cachemate software. It is step by step and easy to follow. I'll send you a copy, if you like. Email me at geocaching.com as Marietta Moose and I'll email you a copy.

Please, Marietta Moose, send me your Word document at bikegoode@earthlink.net. Will it work on a PalmPilot with 1M?

You are going to be pushing it w/ only 1MB on your Palm.
Cachemate is alittle over 300kb just in itself. So if you have anythingelse on your Palm you will probably have to remove i, when you start adding cachefiles because they take up space quick. Two pages on using cache mate and .gpx, interesting. There are really only a few easy steps to using cachemate: 1. Download Cachemate from SmittyWare and pay your $7. 2. Open the download and follow the instructions to get it on to your Palm. 3. Create, Run and download your PQ(.gpx). 4. Open CmConvert (came with Cachemate) load the .gpx file you just downloaded. 5. Press select all, hit convert, save the new file, and hotsync. 5 easy steps. Depends on how well you know what your doing. I just figured it out myself till I got to work. Hopes this helps. You will not be able to do much with only 1 meg, as both plucker and cachemate take almost 1/3 of meg for the program.

How do I delete files off the Palm. I don't mind taking off the address book, the "to do" list features and all that. I am having a hard time figuring out how.
Also as best as I can tell, I have 2 whatevers of memory, not 1. *********** Anna Just because you know the latitude and longitude, doesn't mean you know where you are! |

birdies a Palm V like yours comes with 2 megs. The comments about 1 meg not being enought was for bikegoode who said he had PalmPilot with 1M.
As for the address book, the "to do" list. These programs are built into the Palm and don't directly use any of the 2 megs. They only use memory if you put addresses or to do's into it. Two megs will be tight but should be workable for either cachemate or Plucker. ----- Some of those that wander are lost! |

I have been paperless for a little over 24 hours now, so that makes me highly qualified to give advice. After spending a few hours with GPX Spinner and Plucker, and my first ever Palm these are the directions I wrote out for myself to try and not get lost in the maze again. The directory names I use are no doubt different from yours. I created a directory named c:\GPX to receive data and I installed Plucker in c:\Plucker
Receive PQ.zip in email Double click on the attachment A page comes up with the file name and an option to Extract all Files Click on Extract, then click on next Browse and change destination to c:\GPX. Click Next and Finish A new window appears with the GPX exchange file in it Reduce all windows so you can see the GPX Spinner Icon on the desktop Drag the GPX exchange file from the GPX folder and drop it on top of the GPX Icon A DOS window runs and a file named Cache is produced in the GPX window Open the Plucker Desktop and reduce its’ size Open the Cache folder and scroll down to a file named Index Drag it over to Plucker, drop it and rename it Configure channel box pops up, click OK The name of the new PQ is now on Plucker Highlight it, right click and select Update Selected Channels A progress bar runs, click OK Go to the Plucker directory on the c drive and open the Channels folder Open the new PQ folder. It contains a palm data base file Drag it to Palm Quick Install and hot sync |

Maybe the following will help some people out:
GettingGPXOnYourPalm.html It details getting GPX on your Palm-powered device the simplest way that I know (Allen's remailer may be the easiest but I haven't tried it out). My opinion of the simplest way is gpx2Html.exe + Plucker. Have a look and let me know if there are any problem areas or confusing areas. |

Once you have the plucker viewer installed on the palm using the remailer is somewhat simpler. Here is step required for remailer users.
