I was listening to WABE the other day and the story was on the military grid reference system. Seems like the helecopter pilots flying evacuations after Katrina were having difficulty getting the position of the location from the dispatchers who knew only street addresses. The choppers asked for lat/long and got a big "duh". So a need for a system has been noticed, but the concensus is that the general public is not savvy enough to understand lat/long so the Military Grid Reference System is being considered. Already it has been named the "US National Grid " or something similar. Whereas Lat/long or UTM consist of two numbers defining a point, this system is three characters and one long number defining a square. The more numbers you have, the smaller the square. I think 10 numbers will give a 1 meter square. It is also based on UTM. My magellan meridian has the capability to use either system now and I suppose my Garmin Legend will also. I have belived for some time that we should do away with street addresses and go to something like this. Didn't Black Knight do a cache using MGRS?

I'm not sure, I didn't do all his stuff. But maybe you are thinking of 200 steps??? I know he was talking about using military something when he did that cache.

You know, I believe thats it. He and I talked about it at length and 200 steps rings a bell. He and I talked at length about a lot of things and he went to the farm and camped out and deer hunted, but I have never met him eyeball to eyeball. Wonder if he is in Iraq?

It is 200 easy steps. I help him debug it when he first put it up.

I haven't talked to him in a while. But I don't think he's there. I'm sure I would have heard from Wendy if he had gone.
