Decided that I had done enough procrastinating, so I downloaded Cachemate today and registered it, feeding it the same GPX files I've been feeding to GPX2HTML -> Plucker.

My PDA has a lot of memory, so I can afford to run the two in parallel for a while, to see if I like Cachemate better.

The update process sure is simpler. Up until now, it's been:
  • Unzip
  • Convert (gpx2html)
  • Pluck
  • Sync
With Cachemate, it becomes:
  • Unzip
  • CMconvert
  • Sync
which saves me a step.

The interface is different from what I'm used to, with the five different pages for each cache, but I'm giving it a chance. How can you go wrong for seven bucks? Smile

Scott

Well my process once the email arrives is

Hotsync

Then the file is usable by plucker. This is because my remailer gets the email with the GPX from groundspeak, and converts it to plucker format and then remails it to me.

Now if Cachemate looks useful, I will consider enhancing the remailer to be able to convert to its format, so that it can be directly hotsynced.

I think I put this on the wrong thread: Suddenly Plucker has turned off the "update" switch. This means it no longer downloads the file it takes so long to prepare (I use my PC as processor for the "plucking").

As a result, I have the GPX file I can put in my GPSr, but the PDA never gets updated. I went to CacheMate, but am not as happy with it.

Any ideas, anyone, why Plucker went to "off"?

Trailerman. I had problems with Plucker when I used the update link that was pointed to a website. I have since just used Plucker to point to my spun index page on my PC and that sloved all my issues.

Allen, I read the thread about the remailer some time back, but then promptly forgot you were working on it. Can you either tell me or Markwell me how to get set up to give it a try?

The info is right in this thread (one page back on page 3). He just needs for you to email him and he can set up your own remail email addy. I was gonna do this earlier, but just forgot about it.
Allen I'm gonna email you tonight, cuz I want to try it out also.
Thanx for your hard work.

I actually just started paperless caching today. I got a program called Cachemate a few weeks ago, and loaded it onto my palmpilot. I then found out that it was basically useless to me without also having a subscription to Geocaching.com. This weekend, after seeing all the fools*cough**cough* I mean cachers up there at the GGA meeting running around with GPS in one hand and PDA in the other, that I simply HAD to have this paperless caching thing. So Saturday night, I signed up and built my first pocketquery. I set two of them up: one for here at home, one for at work. Sunday morning, when I got to work, I found my query waiting for me, just as I had set up. I saved it into my geocaching folder and opened it in the converter provided with Cachemate. From there, I converted all the caches, stored them into a file I could load on my palm, and it automatically entered the converted file into the queue to be loaded to my palm. I then synched the palm to the computer, and voila! My caches were all on my palm. I also loaded the same .gpx file into easyGPS, and loaded that off into my GPS as well, making it really easy to make sure I have all the caches in my GPS in my Palm, and vice versa.

I'm up and running on a borrowed PDA, with ScottJ's help. Thanks also to the SledgeHampster for showing me Cachemate.

I put on Plucker, then registered/downloaded Cachmate. Out of the two, I think I like Cachemate a lot better. I like the seperation of info - description, past logs, and the ability to log your own info. I deleted Plucker from my PDA last night. Might put it back on to check out this remailer thing from the middle lacy though.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Ok... I'm rather upset with the way the Palm and cachemate handle the caches. I have managed to get all the cache information onto my palm, but I have found that it is difficult at best to find a given cache. Let's say I'm travelling down the road and I see that there is a cache just off the road. So I stop to pick it up. I want to pull it up in Cachemate, but I don't know the name, only the location and GC#(that's what's stored in the GPSr due to name length restrictions and due to the difficulty inherent in making up unique but identifyable names given the limited space). I can sort by GC#, but it's then an educated guess as to which cache is what GC, and still takes a considerable time to track down and load the cache page. What I really need is a newer palm and a map on the palm. Then I could locate the cache by name on the map on the PDA, look up the name in Cachemate(or other cache software), and then look up the GC# in the GPSr.

Strapped, I want your PDA. Now. Wink

You will get my PDA when you pry my cold, dead fingers from around it (or a better, cheaper model comes along) Smile

Be sure to check out Mapopolis for the Palm products. I've seen it on a Handspring and it works identically to mine. That mapping software rocks!

Once you get the waypoints uploaded using GPXtoMaplet, you can see the caches by name, GC#, placer, etc. The GPXtoMaplet program is very versatile.

Can't offer any help regarding CacheMate since that's not a PPC program (as far as I know). But there's so many other cachers out there that use it that I'm sure one of 'em will point you in the right direction.

I'm still trying to decide on moving over to GPXSonar. After seeing it on KennethPruett's PPC, I'm pretty much sold. I've just got to download and install it.

Best of luck,

- Mark (S-4-C)

Are you running CMConvert to turn the GPX into Cachemate-readable Palm file?
