Several of your are using the remailer, which I allow GGA members to use. For those that don’t know what the remailer is, it almost invisibly converts GPX files to a Plucker file, which can be loaded into your palm, and a waypoint file that can be imported into Garmin’s Mapsource.

I have mentioned that enhancements are coming. The only thing is for the last several months I have been working long hours and haven’t had a chance to work on it.

  1. A big one is that the remailer can do all kinds spinning of the data, changing the waypoint name, description, icon displayed on a Garmin GPS. But the only way take advantage of these is to tell me what you want and I change the parameters for you. I am going to add a web interface so that you can change them yourself.
  2. A list of caches to ignore
  3. A set of locations to build indexes from based on distance
  4. More than one set of templates which the pages for plucker are built from.
  5. To produce a CacheMate File so it will be ready to load into a palm.
  6. A native mapsource file.

But I have to admit the main reason I am working on it now is the increased SPAM I am getting. Now what does SPAM have to do with the remailer? Well the remailer is a part of a program that handles all mail coming to allenlacy.com. Another part of it filters SPAM, in the last few months the Spammers have gotten smarter and my filters are missing a lot. Also I am being Joe Jobbed. So I am ripping the program apart and putting it back together so I can connect it to the open-source Spam detector Spamassassin. Once that is working, I plan to start adding features to the remailer part. I will let everyone know as I add features.

These features are simply fantastic, espcially the web GUI. I didn't realize that you could change the parameters for each individual, or I would have had my script NOT change the cache ID's.
When you incorporate these changes, I still think you should charge us a couple of bucks, at least. I'll gladly pay.

Eagerly waiting.

Well I went ahead and changed the parameters so that your waypoints aren't changed.

If I did that people might expect me to put more work in it. This way when someone askes for a change I can say "It's free what do you expect?"

Allen, I mentioned your remailer yesterday at the meeting and gave people a link to this topic. If you would like, I can add something to the GGA web site when I change the structure of the paperless geocaching section. I would just need to know what would be the best way to put it on there in your opinion. Maybe a link to your GC.com profile? A link to this topic?

Well just a quick status for those of you using it.

I have ripped it apart and rebuilt the program to make it easier to add new features, which I am doing now.

Currently there isn’t much visible. The first new feature is improved spam detection, which of course only helps me. However those of you using the remailer to process your GPX’s may have noticed a “problem” with it this weekend. During my changes I made a mistake which caused it to mess up the “wpt” file which can be loaded into a Garmin GPS. I just fixed that, hopefully it didn’t cause a major problem for anyone.

I am currently working on the webform to let users control how the Remailer “spins” the data in the GPX. I have build the database to hold the setting. I need to get the form working, time to do it will depend on what I have to do at my day job.

Oh mtn-man as for mentioning the remailer, I put up this page http://www.allenlacy.com/GPS/GPXRemailer.htm awhile back. I will improve it once I get the web forms working.

Stay tuned for future changes.

to try out the webform. That should be big improvement for us 'endusers'.
Thanx, Allen, for your diligence.

Sorry to make you wait.

I am having trouble getting time.

First still having to do a lot of "we got to have this changed NOW!" at work.

Second some geocacher who shall remain nameless (but whose initials are Erik) caused me to waste a lot of time hunting coordinates in a block of text. Of course on the plus side I now have 5-10 ideas on how to hide coordinates in a block of text.

Third the Seriously Obnoxious Bunch who is sending Spam with a forged from of “@allenlacy.com” is causing me all kinds of grief when I get the bounces.

Before can get back to work on the web form, I am going to have to spend time on getting the third problem at least somewhat cleaned up.

Dang that 'nameless geocacher'!!! Maybe we should 'tar & feather' him. Hope you get the SOB problem settled. Happened to me once and it took weeks before the bounces to subside.

Due to day job project priority of "It has to be done NOW", I haven't had a chance to do much geocaching or code updates. However last week I got to chance to do a little cache hunting, and that is when I noticed the plucker files delivered by the remailer didn’t have the online logs. I created a bug when I changed the code the last time. Why didn’t some of you using the remailer tell me I screwed up? Anyway I fixed it so I could do a little geocache hunting Sunday while going from place A to B.

I guess I need to get back to the "It has to be done NOW" project instead putting messages on the forum.

Dang, I noticed that the last time I went geocaching and just plain forgot to mention it when I got back to the computer. Like you, I haven't had a chance to cache much for a couple of weeks. Too many Honey-do projects, plus patching the floor in the Sunbird.
We'll try to do better.
