Has anyone here tried the
gmap2gpx "bookmarklet"? I've been using it for a couple of years and thought I'd gotten the url from these forums but after searching through the threads, I couldn't find any reference to it. What it does is take the data from Google's driving directions feature and converts it into a GPX file in the flavor of your choice. It will give you, (A) the turn points as a track, (B) the turn points as a route. (C) the turn points as waypoints or (D) ALL points as a track. Out of these choices, "C" & "D" are the ones I get the most use out of. Here's an example: First go to Google maps and
get the driving directions for your trip, then click on the gmap2gpx bookmarklet (I keep mine in
my bookmarks bar). In a couple of seconds
you'll get a window showing the GPX data for your trip. Just copy/paste it into a text document, save it with a .gpx extension and it can be uploaded to your GPSr or used with a GIS program.
Here's an example of the raw GPX track file (D) opened in MacGPS Pro.
And here it is overlaid onto a USGS quad.
This one also has the turn points (C) displayed and labeled with Google's written directions. I'm sure there's a lotta other ways to utilize the output from this script and I hope ya'll can get some use out of it.
