How does my proposed cache look relative to US lands and WMA?
Step 1. Go to http://www.mycountymaps.com/ga/index.htm and find the GDOT county map for the area. It will be a .pdf file and they are accurate as far as I can tell. Zoom to the area in question. You will notice the boundaries are clearly marked. Make sure you have some street, roads etc to orient to later. Do a Print Screen and minimize or close. I suggest you use Rabun or Gilmer Counties as a test.

Step 2. Bring up paint brush, paint or whatever to create .BMP or .JPEG files and paste the image you put on the clipboard in step 1. Save as a .BMP or .JPEG.

Step 3 Bring up GoogleEarth for the area. Bring the image file you saved in the previous step in as an overlay. This part is tricky, but after you create a couple of overlays it becomes old hat. Use the handles to tug, pull and spin the overlay roads and features until you get a match. You do not have to have a premium version to do an overlay, but I am so pleased with the application I sent them $20 anyway. I turn off the terrain option while I am doing this. Use the transparency bar to alternate in turning the overlay between opaque and transparent. This will be touchy at first but you will quickly gain skill. When the overlay is as good as you want it, turn the terrain feature back on if you wish.

Step 4 Take the coordinates of the proposed cache and plot them as a place marker and you will be able to determine where it is relative to the boundaries. When you view at an oblique angle with the terrain feature on, you may be surprised to see the overlay conform to the terrain. This part blew me away!

This is an inexpensive way to do this without any special software you don’t already have. If you are not using GoogleEarth as an aid to Geocaching, then you need to!
