Two questions:
1.) Are there Gps out there than hhave more than 12 channels for acquiring/contacting satellites?
2.) Assuming you had the perfect constellation of GPS satellites, what would be the highest possible number of sattellites than you can recieve signals from?
Just a wondering.

And what is the 'D' for, that shows up sometime on the really strong satellite bars?

The original design for the GPS satellites was that there would always be 24 active; there are normally some spares in orbit in case of failure. That there would at least be 4 above the horizon everywhere on earth. The orbit configuration that allows this means there will never be more than 12 above the horizon. However WAAS changes this a little. The WAAS satellites broadcast on the same frequency as the regular GPS satellites. So what your GPS does is if it can pick up WAAS satellites it uses one of channels for it. Currently there are two WAAS satellites, and there a few places in the country where if you are in the open your GPS can pick up the both of them. So there are few times when there are 12 GPS satellites and both WAAS satellites above the horizon for a total of 14. But when there are 12 GPS satellites above the horizon some are low in sky and aren’t very useful, so dropping them has very little impact of the calculations. But it does have some and if they ever launch more WAAS satellites then a 12 channel GPS would be ignoring more GPS satellites.

And the “D” means the signal from that satellite is corrected by a differential GPS signal i.e. the WAAS is being use to improve the location calculation.
