I'd like to get a new PDA so that I can really get into this whole paperless geocaching thing... My Palm IIIe simply won't cut it anymore. So my question is this:

I'd like a PDA which has sufficient memory to be able to have a large waypoint set, and I'm somewhat partial to the Palm line of PDAs, but is there a mapping program that will let me display waypoints on a map on the PalmOS? If so, what software is that, and how much is it? If not, does anyone know of an easy way to convert my addressbook and other Palm data to PocketPC?

MariettaGecko:

I'm one of the few that use PPC and I am happy with it. The software for this platform is notorious for being a memory hog, though, just like its big brother.

However, I can load my .gpx files into Mapopolis using GPXtomaplet and it will allow slightly customizable information to show up when you click on a pushpin. Combined with GPXView or GPXSonar, you will have a totally paperless system that will allow you to read the cache pages and see where they're plotted on the map.

Handhelds are becoming much more affordable now, so price is less of a factor than personal preference. Use what YOU feel is right.

Just remember to protect your PDA while in the field!

Yeah. I want something that is relatively easy to use, but on the other side, I am somewhat interested in the portability of the data I NOW have in my Palm III. Although it works now, it's simply not enough. I know that if I get another PalmOS device, it'll port directly without a single other thought. OTOH, if I get a PocketPC device, I don't know if I can import the data there easily. I'll have to investigate that. I LOVED the setup you have on your Dell PPC, S-4-C, and that's pretty much what I'm looking for. I think I will try to make the brunch to see what the PalmOS version looks like and how user friendly it is. If it's decent, I'll look more strongly towards the PalmOS line, simply because it's easier to port my records and programs that I have now.
