DeLorme has been working hard for a long time now to produce their own handheld GPS receiver. First word of the DeLorme Earthmate GPS PN-20 came one year ago at CES and now a release is expected in mid-2006.

Might convince me to stop resetting my Magellan with the 3 finger salute and give them the 1 finger bye-bye wave...

Cool.

I'm still looking for the holy grail...a unit that natively reads GPX files that are transferred to it via USB/serial.

Thanks for your interest. We are hopeful to begin selling the first ten days of January. I would compare it to the Garmin 60CS but the ability of the device to work with data layers is very powerful. Essentially, once you have a topo map, street map, & aerial image on the device of the same location, it is automatically recognized and you can choose which layer you want at that time using the Data Layering on the device. I've been measuring with my beta device at home on the B&W DOQQ imagery and am very impressed with how good the device is. BUt being able to switch among the various data types of the same location really offers a total view unlike what I've seen elsewhere. And as an added benefit, the road routing and back on track, which is a secondary usage for this type of handheld device, is really very good...better than I thought it was going to be and I work here! The interplay between the desktop software and the device has come a long way quickly and is very powerful.

We will offer an in-vehicle mount, a handlebar mount, and SD card and reader, which is suggested for imagery usage given the file sizes, and more. Be sure to check our Web site in early January for more details.

Above quoted from a DeLorme forum. Given that the last couple of release dates have come and gone, I ain't holding my breath. Still, the ability to have satellite photos on the GPS is intriguing.

This looks like a great unit. Now that we have another major player in the market the prices will come down to what they should be. I look forward to seeing the Earthmate GPS PN-20. It sounds like a 60 CS on steroids.

I've not really been excited by a GPS receiver except the one I'm currently using (a Magellan eXplorist 500), but I'm really lusting after this one. I'm going to try to hold out until I can get one a little cheaper, but I think I've got to have this one.

That does look like a nice GPS. I wish one of ya'all would go ahead and buy one quickly and bring it to the Saturday GGA meeting. Wink

I do like the choice of maps/sat views.

I just have a few questions/concerns...

How big is the screen? 176px X 220px means nothing to me. How many inches or mm is that?

If it runs on it's own lithium ion batteries that are recharged via a special cradle, what happens when it dies in the woods. Will my regular AA batteries work too?

I do like to see some competition in the market place to hopefully drive down costs, so it's great to have another player.

Well the specs say
quote:
Uses 2 AA batteries (included)
Optional Travel Power Kit available at www.delorme.com (available with some value bundles)

Sharp high-resolution 2.2" Transflective TFT color display (220 x 176 pixels)

While it doesn't specificly say, I assume you can remove the Travel Power Kit and put the AA batteries in if the rechargeable die.

Erik - It says 2.2"...to make a quick comparison, the Garmin 60csx is 160px x 240 px....so the Delorme is a little wider and a litte shorter than the Garmin 60csx screen.

This is a nice looking unit....too bad it was not out 8 months ago when I bought my garmin 60csx. I do like Delorme PC software much better than the Gamin software....especially since it is included!

Looks like it will accept a variety of batteries.
"Batteries
The Earthmate GPS PN-20 is a battery-powered device. It can be powered by one rechargeable Lithium-ion battery or two AA batteries (NiCd, NiMH, alkaline, or lithium). Two AA batteries and the Travel Power Kit are included."

I uncovered a bug with the GPS and reported it to DeLorme and they're working on it.

It was a little thing like the diplay that pointed to the waypoint pointing between 180 to 90 degrees off and the distance increasing as one got closer.

Such a small issue for a geocacher, eh?

I saw that Rebel. Great how DeLorme is involved in the forums there. Would settle for Magellan just answering an email once in a while. Flaming Mad
Am hoping to move up to PN-20. By the time I get the $$$ the bugs should be worked out.

They fixed the bug! Five days from reporting of the bug to it being fixed. Not too shabby. signal back

I've been playing around with the device and so far I kinda like it. The software will directly read the GPX files from GC.COM, I filter them through GSAK to customize it a bit.

For instance, I modify the waypoint name to include the GSAK smartname as well as the GC#:

I also include the cache hint in the description of the waypoint:

So far so good.

I'm not sure why I didn't see your posting earlier. Am very sorry we didn't hookup at the chili cookoff to discuss.

You're in for a treat. It's a very nice device.

The fault is mine, Rebel - mertat and I were anxious to hit the road and do some caching, so we bugged out pretty quickly.

Don't know what I think yet about the PN-20; I'm still pretty low on the learning curve. I was surprised to find that Delorme is still shipping units with the "wrong way" bug you described, as I found when I hunted my first cache with it after work yesterday. But the firmware patch was easy to find and download.

I'm certainly impressed that it can acquire satellites from inside my house - even in a windowless hallway. Not quite sure how it manages that, but it makes me think it make perform pretty well in heavy tree cover.
