I had the oppotunity to fly to Bermuda and was excited to get some international caches. I knew I didn't have international maps but figured the GPS would at least lead me to the spot. Needsless to say my Colorado 400 would not connect to the satellites to even point me in the right direction. Is there a settig I need to change when traveling abroad or will it only work if I buy the maps for that area?

Sometimes when moving your GPSr long distances from its last 'on' position, it could take quite a while (30minutes) to acquire satellite lock because it might be searching for a completely new set of sats.

You can also try Garmin's 'web updater' to see if you have the latest software or at least the latest list of satellites flying.

Even without maps, the GPSr is just an 'x & Y' coordinator, it should get ya there.

Don't say you can't, say you'll try.

Per garmin page "Why won't my Garmin device acquire satellites?"
quote:
If your unit has traveled over 500 miles while turned off or not tracking your travel, it may take 3-5 minutes to acquire even in ideal conditions.

So under less than ideal conditions it will take even longer.
