All,

I'm hoping someone out there has a PPC handheld that they use with their GPS. I'm wanting to connect my SporTrak base model to my Dell Axim so I have mapping capabilities. However, there are lots of software packages out there that claim to work flawlessly with a GPS and a handheld and I'd like to get some opinions on what real-time users think and use.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'd like to go ahead and make a decision soon I can really use the two units to their potential.

Thanks,

- Mark

I have an iPaq, but I do not use it for mapping/routing.

I have thought about it, but just have not done it.
Sorry I can't help, but if you find out some good information, maybe you can post it for those who might be thinking about it.

Thanks,
Kenneth

I had been looking at Street Atlas, Pocket MS Streets & Trips and Mapopolis, among others. I'll be looking forward to hearing about how you like that product.

Thanks for all of the feedback on this line.

I finally decided upon Mapopolis for my PPC and I'm REALLY glad I did. The software runs like a champ and with the new patch that came out I can now upload maplets of all of the caches that are sent to me in .gpx format.

This has made me *almost* paperless in my caching trips. I still like to record the trips in my log at home. There's just something about having notes on real paper at the end of the day.

Regards,

Delorme says you can't load waypoints into it.
Then they say you can load only 50 with Street Atlas 2004. They also do not support GPX files.
By using gpsbabel http://sourceforge.net/projects/gpsbabel/ I am able to load 100+ waypoints. When you highlight it (waypoint) displays name, terr, diff, and hiders name. (ala Mapopolis?)

The more I use it and fiddle with it, I more I like it.

I'm hopeful that my Delorme Handheld will be delivered here to work today. I've already downloaded gpsbabel (the beta one). What format are you exporting to?

I am exporting to C:/Delorme Docs/Mobile Maps/Wpts Transfer/XMapHHWptsSend using DelormeXMap HH Native.WPT.

Ok, I'll give it a shot. I'm playing around with both the Delmore Handheld and full-blown street atlas now. Got the maps downloaded to the PDA, but haven't tried the waypoints yet.

Also.. I got the Garmin Points of Interest CD.. and am having a DICKENS of a time with it. Anybody every try this stuff? All I want to do is download points of interest for about a 30-mile radius into my Rino. The manual is useless, and the online stuff isn't much better. So far, I'm stuck.

Confused

To use Delorme handheld do you have to have the full-blown Delorme Street Atlas 2004?

However with Delorme Handheld can you still use it on your computer like Street Atlas or do you have to do all mapping & importing waypoints on the Palm?

As the hampster said, they can be used independently and the HH version does not require the full-blown. I just wanted both, so I bought both. I've noticed that the biggie one has a lot more detail, though. Not a big deal, but I thought I'd point it out.

Could you explain the steps to import waypoints onto the handheld in a little detail?

I use gpsbabel frontend as follows:
Input file: Location where I saved .gpx file from GC.Com.
Format: GPX XML
Output file: C:\Delorme Docs\Mobile Maps\Wpts Transfer\XMapHHWptsSend.txt
Format: DelormeXMap HH Native.WPT
Click process.
Hot Sync PDA and viola! Waypoints in SA 2004 HH.
