For terrain like that I think a level 6 is appropriate. One thing comes to mind as a trade item that would fit in that micro: coupons for a sale on underwear. I'd be needing some after hanging out there!

What city is this? I can't identify any of the buildings from this angle. I want to say Chicago, but the other buildings just don't look right.

Looking at the pattern of the streets, I would guess it may be New York City. Most streets shown are on a grid with one street cutting through the picture at a diagonal. That looks a lot like Broadway cutting through Manhattan.

quote: I thought so originally, but I couldn't explain the tall builindg behind the gentlemans' head on the left; if the diagnal you (and I) thought was Broadway cutting through times square... just doen'st work out. If it *is* NYC, I'm surprised. Very new angle from somwhere. Something about Chicago (and now Detroit, but the map doesn't work) is now scraping at my forehead. |

New York, I assume. I cropped out the part that said 'Photo by Vincent Laforet / The New York Times'.
GPSbugs sent me this pix because they knew I had done tower work (none this high, though!!). It reminded me of a couple of guys just discovering a cache. David |

Workers Deke Johnson and Tom Sullivan perform maintenance on the antenna of the Empire State Building on January 13, 2000

The New York Times got this one wrong, actually. The guy on the right is Tom Silliman, not Sullivan. He's the CEO of ERI of Chandler, Indiana, the company that manufactured the antenna. He's still climbing at age 59 (he was 56 when the picture was taken.)
He was even profiled on ABC's "20/20" back in early 2001 in a segment called "Living on the edge." Quite a guy. The antenna you see is for FM radio. It's fed by a custom-designed combining network that ERI also supplied that allows several FM transmitters to feed the antenna simultaneously. The system was put in place in 1992. Let's not forget someone had to take this picture. I would assume that the photographer doesn't climb such a tower often.

The first time I saw that picture, a couple of years back, I assumed it had been taken by a tower crewman, as that sort of thing is often done. When I found out a newspaper photog took it, I was more than surprised. That's one brave lensman.
