I couldn't read the symbol while it was on the cache page.
But in my post it's very clear.... Course I still don't know what it's for roll eyes

Took me a little bit too, Penny. Evidently this was a tie-in to when the movie Planet of the Apes premiered. They set up caches in different cities, had some movie-related items in them. If (for instance) you find one that has 10A in it's name, it was here in Atlanta and was promptly raided by a good number of the veteran cachers who visit these page. smile

I'm supposing they (Warner Bros? Universal? Dunno what studio) made a special arrangement with geocaching for these icons/cache placements.

That's what I deduced, anyways.

There was a second secret
Ape Cache posted two days before the one referenced at the top of the thread. It illustrates the original art work these caches had too.

Ask me about my hunt for it someday. wink

Um. Yeah. I need a full report of how you fetched your morning paper, and the neighbor's caught you in mid-bend!

I think I'll refrain from asking. Notice I didn't ask. smile

No, I think The Thong was a second totally unrelated blemish on my otherwise perfect and virtuous life.

I did not wear a thong on that Project Ape cache hunt, though I did wear bedroom slippers.

Come to think of it, wasn't it Goss who started the reputation defaming "Thong Rumors"?

If you did the ape cache in a thong, you would need a blood transfusion. I ruined a pair of pants making my way to the cache from all the stickers. That was pretty-off trail but easy if you had a boat!

It was no problem if you went around the briars. While I wasn't wearing a thong, my pants were fine. It just required going off trail for about 30 feet. I thought I was going to be first when I didn't meet anyone on the trail coming back, but I was number two.

This is one of the caches I watch and I just got the log notice

This was a very interesting surprise. We were just out walking and discovered this cache all scattered around in the woods. After a brief look/see we got vague idea of what it was. Fortunately some one had left a card w/web site. We took a book and left a discount card for Gaylans put everything back in a double plastic bag and under large rock. Hope we did that right. Now I'm into it. Need a GPS for Xmas.
Sounds like someone stole the ammo box.

Does anyone know who placed the (real) APE cache?

I was contacted by Jeremy about a month before it was released. He was coordinating the project with Warner (or whoever) and they needed somebody in each state to place the cache for them. Jeremy passed along the name of the contact person but I never heard back from her. A few weeks later the Georgia APE appeared. I was major bummed because I had a great location in mind and a contact for getting permission. Oh well. I never would have thought to place it amidst thong piercing briars! razz

If it wasnt for these planet of the ape caches I might not of ever known oif geocaching. When all these things were placed summer 2001 out newspaper did an article about the Ape caches and also geocaching. It talked about the sport and the apes. I went to the web site that nightn and have been hooked ever since.

Happy Hunting! smile
