GAINESVILLE - The U.S. Forest has closed a section of the Appalachian Trail in northeast Georgia because of "persistent bear activity."

“The Appalachian Trail between Neels Gap and Jarrard Gap is closed to camping as a safety measure until further notice," the Forest Service said. "This includes the Blood Mountain and Woods Hole Shelter. Day hiking is allowed."

The forest further advises any camping on side trails should take place at least one-quarter mile from the Appalachia.

Keep especially alert if you encounter bear droppings containing small bells or an overpowering smell of pepper spray.

I didn't think there were any grizzle bears in Georgia.
