I have been to several garage sales recently but also several used book sales and I have noticed people using what appears to be hand held bar code readers. The first time I saw them being used was at a used book sale and they appeared to be rather large and cumbersome but seemed to be doing the job for the folks using them. The second time I saw one it wasn’t much ;larger then a hand held GPS unit. I suspect people were scanning original prices so they could decide whether or not it would be worthwhile to resell the goods. In all instances the users appeared to be of Asian descent. Not a stereotype just an interesting observation. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this new phenomenon. Any way just the first time I have noticed some one outside of a store using these gadgets.
I'm managing a shop that has one, tried scanning the PC screen with my Bar Code Cache on it. With notepad or MS Word open it displayed the coords quite nicely.
Come by and visit me at Discover Mills - CPO Tool Outlet near Bass Pro - and I'll demo it for you.
There are actually a couple of cool websites that allow you to upload a picture of a barcode and it converts the code to text. It can read several different codes such as 3of9 and others and works rather well. Unfortunately, I can't find the site again to demo it!
I tried it with Erik's Barcode cache (after I already found it) and it worked great. Can also take pictures from a phone and upload them. Although not always perfect, it still works depending on the picture quality.
There are also a few apps out on the web, but I'm finding more and more of them are on sites with viruses, so be careful if you download one of these. Nice concept, though,
