There was a discussion on this in the geocoin forums when the coin was first posted on eBay.

In a nutshell, Jon neither supports or condones his coins being on ebay. His thought was to win this one back and then reauction it again for the charity of his choice. Some person with "0" feedback bid the coin up over 1K the first day it was on auction, exposing Jon's maximum bid. Then emailed the seller saying he didn't want the coin and to cancell his bids. At that point we all knew what Jon had bid on his coin. Imahomer came in and sniped it in the final seconds of the auction.
