Dune and Marsh Ecology
Thursday, July 28 , 7 PM
Saturday, July 30 11 AM and 6 PM
Sunday, July 31, 12 Noon

Georgia's magnificent coast has an interesting history. Four thousand years ago, during the last ice age, Georgia's easternmost barrier islands began to form. As glaciers melted and the seas started to rise, a dynamic ecosystem was formed. Join us as we explore the history and features of our coast.

First, we'll learn how our dune system is the first line of defense against storms. And, though it might look as though nobody is home, the dunes are literally brimming with life. We'll visit with a few of the wildlife species here in our dunes.

Next, we'll find out how our estuaries help raise baby animals like fish, birds, and dolphins. The saltmarsh is the true nursery of the Georgia Coast. In fact, 70 % of our food fish species spend part of their lives in a marsh. Many other creatures also call the marshes home. From the tiny fiddler crabs to the shy clapper rails, you won't want to miss this exciting show.

I missed it too. Frown

I posted the note hoping that those who live along the GA coast might keep the sensitivity of the dunes in mind when hiding or seeking geocaches.

Generally, it is the tourists who we usually find disturbing the dunes, the locals know better. Especially since you are liable to get a nice big fine for messing with the dunes!!
