Geocacher

Did anyone see the show on the History Channel called "From Tactical to Practical"?
It is a show about how military created technology is being adapted for civilian use, and GPS was one of the stars of the show (no pun intended). They highlighted a new game called "Geo-Dashing" which is a mixture of GPS and marathon racing. The racers run from point to point where they locate the equivilent of a microcache with the next set of coordinates on it. The GPS, a compass and a map are the only tools (except water etc.) that they are allowed to use. Of course, as with any race, the first to cross the finish line (which is only revealed in one of the micro caches) is the winner.

For my thoughts? I'll stick to geocaching. Geodashing is a little too sweaty sounding to me. Besides, I hate jogging.

I didn't see the show, but I'll agree with you on sticking to geocaching. Anything more than a leisurely walking pace and I'll be a spectator on the sidelines. I wonder if they get to log a Smiley if they win? Laughing

There is actually a web site that has been around that coined the phrase "Geodashing". It is different from the event that was on the History Channel last night (yeah, I saw it too).

http://www.seaotters.net/~scout/Geodashing/

This is the same guy that does minute war. The History channel showed a race along a single route with waypoints, similar to orienteering, but without a map and compass and using a GPS instead. Traditional geodashing is about dashing to waypoints over a 30 day period. The group or individual who gets to the most virtual points on the map wins. Rules are explained here. I was laughing as that guy on the show last night kept calling it geodashing since the guy who runs the geodashing web site is a heavy navicache person. I bet he is a little mad that they were "stealing" the name of his game.
