Have any of you read this book? IT'S GREAT!!! The author & his out-of-shape friend set out from Amicalola to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail.
The book is full of history and great information, but it is also "laugh-out-loud" funny! (I really shouldn't have been reading it while my students were trying to take an exam wink)

My family bought me a book on The Hiking Trails of North Georgia for Christmas, but your book sounds more interesting!

We read it last winter and it is a hoot!!! Recommended reading for anyone with a love of the outdoors, or hiking, or laughing! We got our copy from the library, but wouldn't mind having a copy for the den bookshelf to read again sometime. It's worth a second read!

Read it sometime this past summer after it was recommended in the big geocaching forum. Got these grand visions of me hiking far off into the woods visiting who knows what....that didn't last too long. I don't have the intestinal fortitude for it.

Although, a friend of mine from Nashville quit work for six months and took his girlfriend to hike the whole AT. He described it as loading up your pack with your stair-stepper in the shower with the water on full-blast. Ended up proposing at the end of the trail and has been happily married ever since with kiddies. Good book too.

Thanks for the heads-up - gonna have to check this one out! Especially since Mr. Jordan has @#$@# moved his timetable @#$@#$ again! Grr.

Laughing is good, though I might resemble the out-of-shape dude in the book. Dunno yet, but I'll read it. To Borders, and beyond!

I picked up the book at Barnes & Noble the other night and have gotten around 50 pages into it so far. It's interesting and informative, and Bill Bryson's writing style completely cracks me up! big grin big grin

I tried to read aloud the paragraph about their encounter with the waitress on the morning of their departure onto the trail, and just couldn't do it! I'm cracking up just typing about it. It's a side-splitter, all right.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Went to the library today and picked up a copy. There was a passage that I think any GeoCacher can agree to:

"So woods are spooky. Quite apart from the thought that they may harbor wild beasts and armed, genetically challenged fellows named Zeke and Festus, there is something innately sinister about them, some ineffable thing that makes you sense an atmosphere of pregnant doom with every step and leaves you profoundly aware that you are out of your element and ought to keep your ears pricked. Though you tell yourself it's preposterous, you can't quite shake the feeling that you are being watched. You order yourself to be serene (it's just woods for goodness sake), but really you are jumpier than Don Knotts with pistol drawn. Every sudden noise-the crack of a falling limb, the crash of a bolting deer-makes you spin in alarm and stifle a plea for mercy."

I haven't finished the book yet but I would already recommend it!

Especially if you take "A Walk In The Woods", this book is both a good funny read and has practical information.+

After reading the reccomendations for 'Walk In The Woods', I received an email from an online survey that I did a couple of weeks ago telling me that I had a $15 credit at Amazon for being one of the first 100 to participate. Although skeptical, I clicked the link and got to order my own paperback version for $14.46 total. (I guess the junk mail will pick up now) It will ship within 3 days, so I get to check out my own copy! I was ready to head to the library. Maybe it'll show up in a cache later.

already have it....and it's lost in the piles of other books.

I recieved a collection of works by Emerson and Thoreau entitled "Nature Walking" from a dear freind. Haven't had a chance to start it...hell, I'm still working on Slay's x-mas present. Maybe I'll have some of it finished by the meeting.

I have that one too. I still remember "enema man" and "frosting". Some terms you remember long after putting the book down hoping that you'll never have to apply them.

I was going to leave that one in a cache once, but picked "100 Things To Do With a Dead Cat" instead. Not quite as scholarly a work, but entertaining nevertheless. I know goss has that book too.

Pretty interesting "find" there Penny!

I notice the bars around the toilet. That's an ADA requirement you know. (The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, programs and services provided.)

Glad to see such concientious hunters, despite the beer cans they somehow left behind. ~erik~

Well I had already found one on Dec 9, 2002, which I posted at New cache? thread.

The book does cover this type of "item" and explains(with examples) why you shouldn't get a air tight container. I really liked the "if this happens to someone, they would be scarred for life", line

This goes to prove ... that the federal handicap-access legislation has gone too far ... the dang thing has hand-rails!

With Erik's mention "of the beer cans they left behind", I think I can guess what "disability" required handrails. Big Grin
