My current phone has some GPS capability now. It does depend on the "network capability" though. Potentially a 911 operator could locate me in the case of an emergency (I hope my boss does not follow me as I Geocache!)
The little + sign shows me that I am in an area where the GPS in the phone is receiving a signal. |

Is there a GPSr within the phone or does it establish position by triangulating off of several cell towers?
In other news...West Marine now sells a gpsr wrist watch. Not even Dick Tracy's watch could do that! |

I saw Greg's link but while "embedded gps technology" implies a gpsr within the phone it doesn't entail it. Further, Samsung's claim that "In the future, 911 operators will be able to pinpoint your location in the event of an emergency" and then adding "Dependent on network capability" seems to tie the process to the cell network. That's probably due to the need for a network that will allow the phone to send the coords to 911 folks if the phone is, indeed, a stand alone gpsr.
Between the phone and watch listed above I wonder what the positioning error is in this type of receiver. Even if poor (relative to a stand alone gpsr) it's still a neat feature. |
