I'm getting a flashing airbag light on my dash. It looks like its code 36. Vehicle is a 2000 Mercury.
Can't seem to find on the web what it means and if I need to scoot my seat back a tad. Anyone know?? --------------------- Live Well, Harm None |

I'm not a Ford tech, but I do have access to Alldata at work. Your code 36 could be several problems with the drivers air bag. They are short to ground, to power, open, high resistance, etc. You don't need to worry about it, it can't just "Go off." as long as the lamp is on. When the lamp is on the module powers the deployment loops down to avoid accidental deployment. But you do need to have it looked at to find out why it's on. They do save lives, I just don't like the way they do it. I have access to warranty airbags, with the SC's permission, I may bring one to an event, deploy it and let everyone see one go off in person. You haven't lived till you see one of those things in action. Anyhow, no danger to you, but it needs to fixed.

Thanks, great info!
I found the yellow connector and unplugged and plugged it a couple of times. No change. I'll just have to live with it for a bit until I can get to the dealer. At least I don't have to worry about it blowing up in my face. I've seen an airbag go off on TV. One of the episodes of "Dirty Jobs" where the dude was working in a junk yard had some footage of one of those bad boys going off. I don't have a problem with you doing a demo; I'm sure that all safety precautions will be taken. I always wear my seatbelt so I'm not going to rush out and spend the $$. I will get it looked at some time down the road. As I said, Thanks!! --------------------- Live Well, Harm None |

Kind of a funny statement. My wife lived because she saw one deploy in her face. I don't think the front of the car is supposed to be even with the front wheel! |

They are pretty amazing. I work at a Chevrolet/Nissan dealership in Griffin, when I went to Nissan airbag school, one of the things they told us was that many people believe that the airbag didn't deploy. It just popped out in their lap, but didn't inflate. It happens so fast they don't realize what happened. Even with a countdown, you can't see it inflate. A big bang and this white bag magically appears then shrinks. The hole in the side that lets the gas out is usually 1.5-2 inches in diameter, the expansion of the propellant is so rapid that even with that huge hole, it can hold you off the wheel in most any realistic crash. I really can bring one to demonstrate sometime if there's interest. Problem is, it scares the bejesus out of some folks, and they don't want to drive their car afterwards. Maybe a "Viewers discretion" warning would help. |

I had a airbag warning light problem on my Dodge Caravan once.
A small piece of black electrical tape works wonders to make the light turn off!! Seriously, it really does help to block the view of the blinking light if it is a real distraction. At least until you can have it properly repaired. D-man Member of the Coosa Valley Cachers |
