My wife gave me a remote controlled airplane for Christmas and I'd love to find a geocacher that has a lot of experience with RC planes.

Anyone out there interested in flying RC planes with me someday soon?

Lucky you!!!
I've wanted one for a while now.

Been told finding a place to fly one is harder than finding a place to put a traditional cache.
Heard it is best to join a group as they have a better chance of getting flying space.
Here is a list of groups in the US. Just scroll down to Georgia.

Any cachers fly???

It might be as bit down the road, but there is a radio controlled airplane airfield in Henry County. It's located at the Red Tail Hawk Nature Preserve in McDonough. Apparently run by a club. Click for info. If y'all do come down here, please drop me a note.

And, no, I don't fly RC planes, but I have been told that I am *flighty*.

Hey Joe,
There is a great setup in Cobb COunty, a bit far from you. I even have 3 caches in the park. It is a Coob County Park that the RC Club "manages".

There's also an RC field in Stone Mountain at which I earned my private pilots license in a Cessna in the 1980's. Kind of sad it's only open to "toy" airplanes now, but I guess that's better than being made into a subdivision. Smile

It seems there are lots of these fields. One I thought was pretty cool was the one at Georgia Veterans State Park near Cordele. They also have several aircraft on static display, not the least of which is a B29.

I visited the one in Henry County today just to make certain that it is still a going concern. Coords are 33 25.792 / 84 10.236. I've thought of putting caches in the area but decided not to. Seems the preserve is built on an old landfill and I have no desire for folks to be wandering off trail there. They might grow a third arm.

Hmm. Come to think of it a third arm could be handy. One for a GPSr, one for a walking stick, and one for a PDA. Smile

This doesn't help you Joe, but when I used to live in Chicagoland there was a field nearby that I used to visit. I couldn't afford the thousands of dollars these guys had invested in their outfits, but it was fun to watch. I was amazed by the things they could do with the airplanes. One guy lost a wheel off his landing gear on takeoff, which could have been disasterous when landing, but he brought it in with the wings pitched to keep the wheel-less gear off the grass until the plane had almost coasted to a stop, then gently dropped the wing. The model did a little spin and that was it. He put the wheel back on and was flying again in 20 minutes.

I still fly RC, but not in the last year, so I am probably a bit rusty on the controls. I was a member of the Cobb County RC club for a few years, but I let my membership lapse when my flying became infrequent. Most of the flying sites listed above are AMA sanctioned clubs, which require membership in the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics, no medical degree required). I have a friend in Tucker who flys at some non-club sites in the area, I could check with him if you like. What kind of plane is it?

It's an electric powered airplane called X-plane if that helps.

I'm glad you mentioned the membership requirements of those fields. It saves me from driving all the way out there.

Dougs94 has emailed me and offered to go flying with me someday. Anyone else want to bring an airplane and join us? No date scheduled yet.

Depending on where and when, I might tag along and see if I can still fly RC. I don't have an electric, so that limits my flying sites.

My dad's got a few RC planes but probably haven't flown them in about 10 yrs. Our airfield and landing strip is/was Holsenbeck School Road so it's close to home. Maybe I can get him to fly them again since he's looking to get back into flying the bigger boys.

Hey!

I've got an electric plane I've had for about a year and been dying to try. I'm in!
