With the increase in development of Dacula, this has became a real problem.
Fight Against Illegal Signage Picks Up Steam
The Truckload Bunch

I'm in support of this groups efforts.
I noticed they were focusing their efforts along Hwy 316 and along my street.
The difference is noticable and appreciated.

A similar effort in Atlanta: Atlanta Street Spam Eradication Campaign

If you know of any such groups for other Atlanta metro areas, maybe you can share them here.

Thanks,
Kenneth

Glad to see efforts like that. I copied and pasted the websites to the chairman of my county commissioners.

I am particularly sick of all the sign litter around my community. Signs like these are everywhere, and it disgusts me everytime I see them. It has gotten worse over time. And the various powers that be try to call a geocache litter??? This is the ultimate litter in our communities. Good for The Truckload Bunch.

After Katrina...looks like some of the mess is not the damaged houses, but the flood of signs:

I have been pulling signs down in front of my office (from telephone poles) for quite a while, mostly because they cause a major vision obstruction at the intersection. Does anyone know of a similar ordinance in Fulton county? If you know where to find it online, I'd appreciate the link.

Thanks.

It was pretty bad down there. I did not see anything quite as bad as your photo, but they were everywhere in the flood zone. The funniest one in the picture above is the one advertising "Need a sign?". Of course, the devistation is so bad that you don't notice the signs as much as the brown grass everywhere, the mud covered cars and boats sitting beside the road or in front yards.

I don't know of one for Fulton.
You might want to contact the website owners to see if they know of anything like that for other areas.

I would think putting signs on utility poles is probably forbidden everywhere...but you never know.

mtn-man...yea the "need a sign" sign is just too funny.

I found and took a quick peek at the Fulton County Code Sign Ordinance, but I could not find anything about citizens being allowed to enforce it, unless they were "Citizen Deputies", which involves approval by the Board of Commissioners. I then looked at the Truckload Bunch data for the Gwinnett County Code and couldn't find explicit permission for citizens to enforce/remove the signs there either. I may pop this over to Truckload and see if they can point me in a clear direction.

Here is what the Bibb County Code says:

quote:
Sec. 12-31. Posting signs on bridges and poles without consent.
It shall be unlawful for any person to post or display in or upon any bridge any sign or advertisement or to post or display upon any telegraph, telephone, electric or other utility poles or upon any public property or upon the private property of any person, any bills, signs or advertisements without the consent of the owner thereof.
(Ord. No. KK-98-45, § 1, 9-24-98)

(municode.com)

It does not saying anything about citizens enforcing it though.

I don't think you are going to find permission for vigilante enforcement..... just be a vigilante and rip the suckers down. (an unofficial opinion from a member of the Georgia Bar) Roll Eyes

Actually, I am in agreement. I was just wondering if the Truckload Bunch might have something that did support their activities. Their website says
quote:
Furthermore, the law allows any citizen to remove and destroy illegal signs just like any other abandoned roadside trash. We ask you to please help! If you see signs like these, please remove them immediately!

Well on their site, they say it is ok.

Of course links to code law would be best.

I'm sure there is no code or ordinance that authorizes such, but don't let that you prevent you from being a "good citizen just ridding the county roadways of illegal trash". My best advice however is if you happen to be a supporter of the opponent to the incumbent sheriff.... don't remove the sheriff's signs. Idea

Good point Tarvol.

Good citizens will pickup trash when possible and this is definitely trash.

Would be good if they had a way to reward people for pulling them.

This is what I have been able to pull from the Fulton code online. It looks real similar to Gwinnett.

quote:
33.4.9 Sign specifications. (Amended 09/04/91, 9/1/99)

Location. All signs shall be located on-site, outside of any public right-of-way except where otherwise specifically permitted off-site by provisions in this article. Any sign placed on public right-of-way except where otherwise permitted by this article shall be deemed to be illegal and shall be immediately removed by the responsible party or be subject to removal by the appropriate enforcement body. Fulton County shall have the right to recover from the owner or person placing such sign the full cost of its removal and disposal. (Added 04/07/93, Amended 9/1/99)

Setback. Unless a more restrictive setback is specified in conditions of zoning, all signs shall set back at least ten feet from the right-of-way or 20 feet from the edge of pavement if a private street and no sign shall project over the right-of-way. ...

Well I sent a note off to the Truckload bunch, and while they did not have any information specifically about Fulton County, they did point me to some links for the City of Atlanta. In addition they explained the following regarding how they approach the legal aspect of removing trash ... er I mean signs.

quote:
In Gwinnett, illegal signs are trash. Therefore anyone can remove them just like they can pickup any other roadside trash. I think this activity would be properly called trash removal, not code enforcement. I don't think this is explicitly written in the law anywhere. If I were a lawyer, perhaps I would get into a discussion about how the People retain all rights not explicitly granted to the government, or some other legal principle, as an explaination and defense.

Perhaps more pertinent, when we say THE LAW allows citizen removal, we also mean the Law Enforcers and Law Makers (police and county leaders). See enclosed memo. Feel free to post this.

From a "truckload volunteer."

This seems like a valid approach. Thanks to everyone who has added to the converstation. Thumbs Up
