It's not the kill......It's the thrill of the hunt. |
His real name is mentioned in the second Google you listed. If you his name in, you get quite a lot. Try this.

Yes, I saw him several times. I have also seen the book "America's Goat Man: Mr. Ches McCartne". But it is very expensive, now.

Skyman, you know that growing up in Middle Ga, I remember him. As I recall, when he got too old to travel home was an old school bus over in Twiggs County. He was in and out of this area when I was a little boy. Many times I have seen him camped at Seven Bridges on the south side of Macon.

Weedoggie,
This brought back allot of memories I had thought I had forgotten. The Goat Man would past through Marietta going North then again going South. He used the old 41 hwy that being the road that runs by Kennesaw Mountain. He would always stop by the Mountain and set up camp for a day or two and word would get out in town that the Goat Man was back. People would flock to visit his wagon. The last time I recall seeing him I was about eighteen. I bought a few things from him over the years. Not things I needed or really wanted. Just for the pleasure of the transaction and having a souvenir from the Goat Man. Thanks for this thread and the memories. It's a matter of degrees |

That brought back some interesting memories for me too. I don't recall seeing the goat man, but I did not move to Atlanta until 1970.
What I remember is the picture of the goat man in the second link at the top of this thread. Some years ago, when mtn-man added the "erik thong" to the Cafe Press "GGA Shop" site I used that photo to do a PhotoShop creation with Greg's face replacing that of the goat man in retaliation. I never did post my "Goat-Boy" creation, but when I saw that photo it brought back some interesting memories.... ~erik~ |

That does bring back memories for me also. My dad opened the Economy Auto store at Belmont Hills Shopping Center back in 1955 and goat man would come through there once or twice a year. The thing I remember most was the smell and how the kids loved it and the adults hated it. Thanks for helping us to remember.

Well ya’ll maybe have already thought of what I’ve been a thinking,
If any one that might have ran across a cache that pay’s homage to the Goat Man let me know that’s what I was thinking of, all kind of ideas are running thru my head now but I have just gotten home from work day that started at 7pm yesterday. Though this is long and because I’m such a slow typist and suffer from chronic writers block please bear with me. I am tired but really want to post while some of this is fresh in my thoughts. It might not be worth reading but right now but I’m lite headed and don’t care. ~erik~: Strangely enough how this idea came about was from a little tongue in cheek humor, when a post over in groundspeak that I was just fixin to reply to about a comment that was right after mtnman’s post about a probable sock puppet logging Tbug’s. There were comments about the pic in the profile that she was cute and something along the lines that it looks like the pix that accompany spam-fishing expeditions with sexual themes. I was going to post [well hold on there fellers that’s my sister ya talkin bout though I sold her years ago to tha goat man to go on the market but I still lubber] I know I was tired then too. But started thinking I wonder how many people would know who the heck I was relating to. Trez: Now that’s really cool, what a great memento and wonderful conversation piece out of curiosity would you still have them? Allenlacy: Thank you for the link I haven’t been reading all that much the past year but this one is a must do. Orpheus: And thank you for the link about the third one down I don’t know why but it took me straight to an Ebay listing for the books and DVD’s of the books sooo bam what ya know the FTF prize. Tarvol: I had to save yours for last, yes I remember him at seven bridges and I believe that his main place of stay was on US 80 this side of Jeffersonville but passed the Dry branch area. I remember seeing him many times ever since I was very little all over, even in FL, with the goats and wagon and his trove all dangling and clanging. And that init self brings back memories of how people spoke of and about him. From a harmless ole coot that never bathed, to tales of you kids better stay away and steer clear that he’ll eat un-minding children. I feel fortunate that I was able to meet and speak with him when I was older I can’t remember the year but it was around when the music industry was king around here but just starting to wind down. There was going to be a wedding and party of some of the in-crowd that I got invited to and the Goat Man was going to preside yes he was a minister. I thought how chic is that, not to say of the fun and of my head swelling to be invited. Every thing was great it was party city, of course I had to make my way over to speak to the Goat Man. Bathed and dressed up by the way. We spoke for a short while and to my amazement found him to be well read and spoken at least in my opinion. I remember him saying something through the course of our conversation to the effect of. (Have confidence in your own judgment; that I shouldn’t give undue deference, to the opinions and feeling of others). That had a very profound effect on me and this is why. After a short while the ceremony started and the Goat Man stated that he was proud to be chosen the preside over the ceremony the vow’s took place and the applause was rising when the bride and groom shouted out April Fools yep they got everybody, by saying only fools get married so why not today. That’s when I noticed the look on the Goat man’s face he was truly astonished and let down I felt for him he knew that he was a butt end of a joke. I was so sad, he didn’t see it coming he was serious about his pride and of it being an honor to preside. Well the morrow of this little story, which is true, by the way, and laugh if you wish but my eyes are whelping up as I write this. I left having little respect for people that have fun at the expense of the feeling if others. But I left as a more knowledgeable, therefore a happier well-rounded and profoundly thankful individual to having met him. You never really know how someone will positively affect you or someone’s life even by what the masses may consider a crazy, dirty, abnormal, eccentric, even what boogeyman stories are made from. Like an ole coot, the GOAT MAN. It also has part to do with my sig line. Sorry to be so long. I’m off to sleep now. There is one thing that I Have learned. The more I learn the more I learn how much I don’t know. |

Wow, that is a wonderful, although a bit sad story about the Goat Man. Being a Louisiana transplant, I had never heard about him. Thanx for sharing. Probably every area has their own 'eccentric' personality. Ours was named 'Delos'. He was perceived to be a 'bum' that wandered the railroad tracks and back roads, sometimes pushing his wire grocery cart filled with who knows what. He was a loner and shied away from people, and I don't think he ever took a bath.
As a young 'stoopit' Boy Scout we would sometimes holler at him and throw rocks when he was around. I know ... I have NO excuse for my un-scoutly ways back then. (Our Scout Hut was sitting next to the tracks and every now and then he would be at the nearby Hobo Camp). One day when there were no other scouts around to egg things on, I went up to him and sparked up a conversation. He told me his name was Delos Nobles and that he was born in 1910. He said that he chose his lifestyle and enjoyed it, and the freedom that came with it. I sat with him for an hour, spellbound at some of his travel stories, and he forgave me for tormenting him in the past. I also got into trouble when I explained to my parents why I was so late coming home. After that, every time the scout meetings were over, I went looking for Delos and brought him food I had 'stolen' from my house. Never got caught either. I found out a few years ago the Delos died in 1990 at the age of 80 and was buried in the local cemetery. It was learned upon his death that he owned a ramshackled house in rural SE La. and that he had a tidy sum of money hidden in socks in the house. Only then did his sister come forward and claim kinship. Delos was scary looking, but he was a friend. |

Erik, phat.bak and others, while the Goat Man was from Georgia, and moved back here when he quit traveling, he went all over the lower 48 states.

It's not the kill......It's the thrill of the hunt. |
Growing up on the southside of Atl. I never met anyone like these guys. Living in a less than desireable area my little mind was filled with warnings of how every corner had a kidnapper and never speak to anyone unless my parents gave it the ok. Now it seems like modern times has spelled the end of folks like these. When was the last time you heard of someone like this? The only constant is change. But to phat.bak,
Isn't that just a redneck with hot sauce? |

Hey, I LIKE that one ... it's been awhile since I heard it. Another popular one is that we are rednecks turned inside out .. hehe
That's My neck of the woods. I was born in Bogalusa, and my wife is from Covington. Both are just up the road from Mandeville. We lived just off of the lakefront in Mandeville for a couple of years before heading up to the mtns. What a change! And yeas, the summers are definately worse there than here. 100+ degrees and 95% humidity. Sometimes it was hard to even breath. Since I have acclimated to the mild Georgia temps, whenever I go back to visit (usually in July/August) it is just downright oppressive. but, ... that's what beer is for! ... Laissez les bon temps roulez! edited to fix temp.. |
