Me and some friends are planning a trip to Glacier , Zion, Grand Canyon, and Rocky Mountain National Parks. Our trip was kind of a spur of the moment thing because we leave May 10th.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about any of these parks to recommend some good backpacking trails(Glacier and Rocky Mtn) and day hikes (Zion and Grand Canyon). OR if any of you know anybody that could provide some recommedations that would be great.

Also when crossing from the US to Canada what documents are required? (ie. passport?, birth certificate?, etc.)

Thanks!

Well the state dept website http://travel.state.gov has a page on Canada which says
quote:
ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: All persons entering Canada may be required to present proof of citizenship and identity. U.S. citizens are encouraged to show a U.S. passport. If they do not have a passport, they should be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver’s License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or expired U.S. passport. U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid U.S. passport. A visa is not required for U.S. citizens to visit Canada of up to 180 days. Anyone seeking to enter Canada for any purpose besides a visit, (e.g. to work, study or immigrate) should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest consulate prior to travel. Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact the Canadian Embassy or nearest Canadian consulate well in advance of any planned travel for further processing, which may take some time. For further information on entry requirements, travelers may contact the Embassy of Canada at 501 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20001, tel. (202) 682-1740, or the Canadian consulates in Buffalo, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York or Seattle. The Canadian Embassy’s website is: http://www.canadianembassy.org/.

It is my understanding that Allen's quote is ok until January 1, 2007 when it will be necessary to have your US passport to travel out of the U.S. and get back. Your best bet is to use a U.S. passport for ID. I'd get my passport PDQ, if you don't have one already, to make any future spur of the moment trips less of a hassle. Yes, sir I know what free advice is worth; just what you paid for it.

A passport has made my overseas travel simple for more that 20 years. In a pinch, a birth certificate and a GA license will work for about 8 more months. Enjoy your trip.

According to the New Requirements for Travelers, you will need a passport starting Dec 31, 2006 for air and sea travel to Canada, but you have until Dec 31, 2007 before you have to have a passport for land border crossing.

In Zion we hiked (waded) the Narrows, which is a narrow canyon with a river filling most of the bottom. This is a neat experience.

We did most of the hike up to Angel's Landing but had 3 small children with us and did not make the very last part. The last part is not for kids or folks with a fear of heights.

There are many other good hiking trails in Zions, some involve narrow trails on the side of high cliffs, others are along streams and waterfalls. There were books about the trails available in the gift shop at the park ... you may be able to order one.

I have not done much hiking at the Grand Canyon, but there are some nice trails on the North Rim. The North Rim is higher and has trees and more wildlife. If I were younger, I might try the hike down to the floor of the canyon.

Have fun.

Reliable poop says that going down the south rim on the same trail as the mules is not recommended for a whole variety of reasons, but most of them are scatological.

I went some time back, and was turned back from the north rim due to fires, but at the time, it was highly recommended as the better of the two sides.

I would not recommend ever spending the night in Page, AZ -- I did. The view of Lake Powell was nice, but the wind gusted from 60 to 70 mph all night long. I could never even get my tent up. Had to sleep in the truck bed. Not one of my better moments in life.

Thanks everyone. We have had to make some changes due to our inexperience with the Rockies and we will no longer be going to Glacier, but will instead visit Yellowstone and Grand Teton.
Thanks for all the recommendations.

Charlie P, nearly everyone I have asked has recommended Angel's Landing. That is definitely on the to-do list.
Birdies thanks for the warning about the South Rim trail. Thankfully we will be on the North Rim.
Since we will be mainly car camping we will definitely ask the loclas about the good trails when we get there.
