I recently tried to play some MP3's on my system and I noticed the speakers weren't working. The subwoofer & satellite speakers both show Power (green lights are on). I checked all the connections to make sure they were snug. I checked the Volume Control properties to make sure the volume setting was on and it was. I tried plugging the speakers into my laptop, thinking it might be my sound card, but they STILL didn't work.
Any ideas why speakers with power, snug connections, and a working sound card won't play? Thanks! |

YYM,
Could you have blown the speakers by playing the Viking Kittens video at max volume? Sorry, couldn't resist. But it does sound like you may have a blown set of speakers for some reason. I'm no expert, though. Have you had any spikes or surges recently which may have caused damage? Just a thought. - Mark (S-4-C) |

I believe Strapped-4-Cache hit it on the head. I forgot that the other day we had a blown fuse in the house. While I was flipping the switches down stairs, I inadvertently turned off the one for my computer room, so everthing went down hard. I can only assume that's what did it.
Now for the question I'm dreading to ask. What, if anything, can be done with blown speakers? Can anything be saved or repaired? Or is it time to head down to the computer store for some new speakers? Thanks for the help! |

It the speaker set is somewhat inexpensive, I'd toss them and replace with new ones. However, if it's a more expensive set you should be able to buy replacement cones at a stereo shop, desolder the blown ones and replace with the new. Of course, if you have bridges and other more complex wiring as part of the set it becomes more complicated to replace the cones.
Just my thoughts. - Mark (S-4-C) |

It's pretty unlikely that you blew ALL THREE speaker cones at the same time just by powering a room down and back up.
Two possibilities ... one would be to look for a blown fuse inside the speaker where the amplifier resides (probably in the sub or in the speaker that has the volume control). Could be that you're getting power as far as the LED but no further. Second ... if the speakers have a headphone jack, plug something into it and then unplug it again ... do that a couple of times. There are little contacts in there that cut off the audio to the speakers when the 'cans are plugged in, and those contacts get dirty or oxidized sometimes and stay open. -- Scott Johnson (ScottJ) |
