The Last Great Race is now going on. This year, they are tracking some mushers live with gps technology. Check it out: Live Musher Tracking
You'll have to sign up for a FREE email update to see it, but it is worth it. The 3D aerial view is cool.

I have a question now. There seems to be a lot of discrepancy in positions. Does this mean they use a staggered start and base the results on total time on the course?

Yes, they do. You can't really get a definitive standing until they ALL take their mandatory 8 hour and 24 hour layover. Then they are all on the same time slot. Early on in the race, the lead changes frequently. Check out Rachael Scdoris. She is the only legally blind musher to compete, and has to have another musher escort her. Of course she has no chance, but her determination is legendary.

Never mind - I see now that the checkpoints are what looks so spread out. The mushers are fairly grouped.

My favorite race of the year! One year I'm going to go up and see it in person. In the meantime they do great updates on the websites and the GPS Tracking this year is very cool.

INteresting twist of events ... the leader (Gephart)got lost on the trail and an 'honorary' E-Team member Wanna Be (DeeDee Jonrow) took the halfway honors. Who would have thunk!
Some mushers are coming off of their mandatory 24-hour layovers, so it should get real interesting now.

Mackey snuck out of a checkpoint in Elim and snookered King for the win. It's a great race, and an awesome place.
