Not sure why I'm posting this here, other than that I couldn't think of a better place.

Does anyone know the reason there are _NO_ 7-Eleven stores in the entire state of Georgia? I'm a Virginia boy and grew up on Slurpees (explains a lot, dunnit?) and it occurred to me the other day that it's just WEIRD ... this is the only place I've ever been in the US that didn't have any 7-Elevens.

I think someone mentioned once that it might have had something to do with Southland losing their ABC license, but I think that was more conjecture than anything else...

Who's got the scoop?

Scott

I think 7-11 pulled out of Georgia in the mid 80s. I've heard that the competition from other small stores did allow for a good profit line. I'd be interested in hearing the real reason!

Oh, btw, Southland changed its name. Now 7-Eleven, Inc.

See ya on the hunt!

I remember 711s in the 80s, and I want to say that there are a few...very few...left.

Sounds like an idea for a locationless cache to me!

...but I think they still have 'em in Wisconsin and Minnesota. I travel all over North America and generally don't pay much attention to convenience stores unless I need gas or to go potty. I didn't notice any in Maine this week, anyway. I can check out Seattle next week and Vegas next weekend. Who can check out the other 47 states?

Didn't the 7-11 CEO die this week?

Map of 7-Elevens in Georgia.

Of course in states that still have them it would be too easy.

They are all over the DC area. In Kansas and Florida as well. Funny. When I moved from KC I found it strange there were no QT's in Florida. I used to have all the Squart bottles and mugs to get refills, but that stopped while I was in FL. QT's weren't to popular in DC when I was there either. Hmmmm. Shrug

I KNOW THE hISTORY OF THE 7-11'S IN GA.

Back in the late 70's early 80's there were lots of 7-11's in GA. They also had competition from many small regional stores. The biggest one was Munford which owned Magic Markets.

Munford bought the 7-11's in Ga from Southland as they were having some tough times.

All the 7-11's were then changed to Magic Markets.

Several years later Munford ran into cash problems and sold or closed most of their stores. Kind of like what has just happen with Country Cupboard.

In Real Estate and retail is all about.

I wondered about that too, so I asked a guy I know who works in advertising.

Apparently, 7-Eleven uses an ad-buying company. These companies go out and buy blocks of TV advertising airtime, in bulk, from TV station owners, cable systems, satellite providers, and the like. They buy HUGE quantities of airtime very cheaply -- cheaply enough to re-sell it.

When someone like 7-Eleven buys a flight of national advertising from an ad-buyer, they pay the buyer a flat rate and give him a tape. The buyer dupes the tape and sends it out to all the stations he works with, irrespective of location or market. The stations run the ads, send affidavits back to the buyer, and subtract the time from the buyer's account.

So, the ads reach a lot of useless markets, but they reach the useful ones too. It's far, far cheaper and more time-efficient than the alternative -- individually buying ad time from thousands of stations, one at a time.

Man, it just goes to show . . .

If you ask about anything in these forums, you'll get a good, clear answer. Which leads me to ask:

If a man says something, and his wife doesn't hear him, is he still wrong? Fool Laugh

Great info, guys! I feel like I learned something today!
