That's what I thought.

Since there are so many independent news avenues, someone just says it is martial law and like a rumor it is spread around.

Birdies...can you link to the story or is it subscription based?

See 3rd story down.

Still seeking a HAM operator that can potentially connect with someone in Carriere, MS to determine if the town (not far from Pickayune) is there? Flooded? Gone? OK? And potentially connect a family member or get reports to find if if her relatives are alive or not.

I heard reports where people would be allowed to return to New Orleans in a week to get belongings and then they'd have to leave for at least a month... where the heck would you go for a month?

We're listening to the mayor's broadcast now... where she was saying the people at the Superdome would need to be evacuated out of New Orleans completely over the next 2 days. Where can you take 20K people? LSU?

Looking at the pictures and the video, I just can't fathom what it's like to be in the heart of all this distruction. The images look like the Tsunami devistation.

And it's not just New Orleans. Mobile and Biloxi are in shambles too.

Thanks.
Someone also update the Wikipedia entry for Martial Law to reflect this.

Not sure of any HAM operators.
Seems like Trailerman is licensed, but he is doing the great loop.
I wanna say gpsfun (Brad) is licensed, but not sure.
Maybe try his profile (I can't offer his help, just seeing if they might).

The AJC has some good coverage. I was struck dumb when I saw the picture below.

I don't know of any ham operators but I was looking on GC.com and found the ham radio forum. About halfway down the 1st page is ScottJ from Georgia. I don't know if you want to try to contact him for help or not but thought I would let you know. Here is a link to the page he is on. GC.com ham radio group

Thanx for the link. I have been watching that site also. BTW - the correct link is WDSU
It is the 'other' TV station in NOLA. They have some great video, tho.

The problem with ham radio is having power to run it. If they have batteries they might be conserving them. I'm not sure how many ham radio operators have battery systems. I would imagine it is not many.

I got news that my uncle's house in Houma is actually pretty much OK. They got back and have no power but did not get much damage. My aunt finally got in touch with my parents and she and the rest of the family she is staying with are OK. They ended up waiting at a store in Baton Rouge until a truck with generators came in. My aunt's house is just west of City Park. The 17th Street levee breach is allowing water to come into that part of the city. The good thing is that news footage from this morning on Fox News showed water running out of the neighborhoods and back into the canal. The bad thing is that the biggest breach shown on TV was at least 600 to 700 feet long. They are bringing in k-rails to try to plug it temporarily, I would suppose when the water flow equalizes again.

More Katrina fallout...the petroleum pipelines from the Gulf are shut down, with no ETA to return to service. This is going to cause likely shortages here by Labor Day. 96 rock reported that gas prices just broke $3.00/gal for regular unleaded here in Atlanta. It's only gonna go higher, folks. This weekend may be my last weekend of caching for awhile if the prices skyrocket.

My husband called and said that prices in Griffin are already at $4.00/gal and rising. Caching weekends may not be the only thing I have to stop if the prices keep rising. I may have to find a new job closer to home if the prices keep rising.

Real report from Griffin, went at lunch to fill up before it got too bad, Diesel is 2.70, reg gas is 2.94, seen as high as 3.25 for reg, and was told by the station that it's going up more by days end. Bad part is, they're raising the prices on what's already in the ground.

Gas jumped 20 cents yesterday while I was in class. Luckily there is a raceway with 2.48 while everyone else was hitting near 2.70. My mom told me that they are shutting the local pumps off here tonight (just for the night for some reason) and apparently the gas is now up near 2.80. Wish I had a hybrid.

Also I heard on CNN that the water in/around NOLA is dropping a few inches an hour, and they mentioned something about beginning to pump out water. I jsut caught the tail end of the stroy maybe some one else knows more...

Happy Hunting! Smile

Most stations here in Rome are out or will be by days end. Looks like caching is temporarily suspended.

Gas here jumped $.40 per gallon from yesterday. Understand that some stations in Macon are closed because of no gas. Glad your family is safe mtn-man. Some of you have met Jann C. from Fort Valley. All of her family in NOLA lost their houses to flood. They still haven't located everybody but think that everyone is alright and that some headed west to Texas

Cheapest gas in Cleveland is $3.19, except they ran out. I filled up there last nite for $2.54 for the SAME gas. I'd calll it gouging.

Am leaving tomorrow afternoon with my brother from Va for Bogalusa, La with a truck full of food, water, a chainsaw, and an extra 100 gals of gas to leave for a generator I'm bringing. Mom has agreed to come back with us to Va, but my hard-headed Ole Man refuses to leave. They have been isolated with no news, and don't know the magnitude of what is happening around them.
Anybody got a set of handcuffs?

Take a gun. If the looting and associated violence is anything close to what some of the bloggers are reporting from the inside, it might come in handy.
