Recovering Geocacher

Got the following today from Matt Pate, who'd asked that he ok any caches placed in Forsyth Cty parks:

Subject: RE: Geocache in Forsyth Co

Hey Erik,

Just wanted to follow up with you and tell you how much I appreciate you guys coming to me to ask for permission to set those caches. What I'd like to do since you seem to be the regional approval person is to have you submit things to me rather than individual cachers asking me for approval. That way I have one point of contact and I'm not trying to keep up with all these folks. Would that be acceptable to you?

I'd also like to talk to you all about doing some GPS/Cache courses for the public through the park's department. My idea was to do a GPS 101 class in the Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter (07) and at the end of the class you talk about geocaching and have them get a piece paper with all of the park caches and they then go find the parks on their own. It would be a great way to have them get into the hobby and see all of our parks at the same time.

If we could find a time in the next few weeks to sit and discuss I can get you all to fill out a class/instructor application and we can then submit it for the Spring Brochure.
Look forward to hearing from you all.

KVOM had contacted him to review the location of a series of new caches he's putting out, so Matt sent this to Kirk too. I replied that I'd be glad to assist with a class but spend a lot of time on the road, and would rather not commit to something I might not be able to carry through with. I don't know if Kirk can do this either, but I wanted to post this for our group.

We had a similar request last year from Dr. Patterson in Gwinnett County, and I'm not sure if anyone was able to follow through on conducting that class, but if you live in or near Forsyth county (the Cumming area) and can help out please pipe up.

This would be a great way to teach others about our sport and give back to the park authorities who support us.

Thanks!

I can help. It's in my backyard and I have worked with Matt before.

It's a matter of degrees

Thanks, Trez.
Matthew Pate e-mailed me with

I'll have my program coordinator contact Trez Moore to set up GPS classes for next year.

So consider yourself drafted. Wink

Dana the Columbus Recreation rep made a good point at the July meeting that I have not heard before about caching in parks. She said that the county can no longer afford to pay for rangers and geocachers were another set of eyes. Obviously, I am not arguing for police patrol duties by geocachers but this can be another form of neighborhood watch. This can add to the argument for geocaches in parks.

Interesting take on what was said but along with that there may be a desire by rangers to contact specific cachers who logged caches on a particular day. How do cachers and the GGA and the other groups feel about being possibly less annonymous? Will cachers be willing to provide real names, addresses, phone numbers etc. to any group who will provide that data to park rangers so the rangers can have cachers help be "park watchers"?
