Looking for volunteers to do a repeat of our GPS class at REI. They've asked for volunteers for each of their three stores the evening of August 7th. The optimum would be to have a minimum of three at each store. I can be at the Mall of Georgia location. Please let us know if you can help out ASAP so we can let the REI folks know it's a "go".

For a bit of history - REI has let us use their facilities for several of our winter meetings when it's been too cold for an outdoor meeting. In return we held training last year at the two stores they had at the time. Now they have a third store. Basically it's designed to give those who are considering the purchase of a GPS, or have a newly purchased one, a short class on how it works and what you can do with it. It gives us a perfect opportunity to get new converts for geocaching.

Thanks,

~erik~

being all for earning my service hours during the summer i MAY be able to make it to the perimeter or atlanta one(the one inside the perimeter), which ever needs people, MOG too far for an evening event, however i couldnt do it alone, trust me.

If war protesters don't believe in violence what would they do if we punched them in the nose?

Thursday nights are the only time of the entire week I have an ironclad conflict. I can't help on this one for that day/time. if it was daytime or any other evening, I'd be all over it.

I had planned to be at one of the two other locations -- Perimeter Mall or just off of I-85 between Clairmont and N. Druid Hills.

Immediately I thought, "Hey, I can do that", but then I re-thought and that Thursday evening I'm likely to be up to my elbows in BBQ sauce and smoked pork in preparation for the Saturday GGA cookout. In case things change, I'll keep my eye on this post. REI@MOG would work, as I live 10 minutes away.

Since I work in Smyrna and live in Hoschton, I go by all three REI's (depending on route) on my way home, so I can go to the one that needs me most.

I prefer the MOG location for two reasons. 1 - That has become MY REI store, and 2 - I will be closer to home at the end of the class, thus I will not be toooooo late getting home. That way Mamma Jacket will give me Disgust instead of Flaming Mad

But then I'll give her Up To No Good
And she'll give me Roll Eyes
Me: Sneaky
Her: Blush
Me: Tounge
Her: Heart
Me: Cool 3 Good to go for another meeting!

I can always tell when I'm in trouble with the wife when I get home late. She has an old Mood Ring. When she's in a good mood, it turns green. When she's in a bad mood, it leaves a red welt on my forehead. Laughing

If you can help out w/o getting a red welt on your forehead it would be appreciated.

Erik,

I can do MOG (preferred) and possibly one of the others if the class is not too late.

No, I don't have a time. I would guess around 7pm, but that's just an educated guess. I can't remember what the hours were when we did this last year. Maybe one of the other participants has a better memory....

I don't have a better memory, but I think you are right. I will see if we can get some clarification.

As mentioned by jonshai, I have plans every Thursday evening, so I would be unavailable. Just about any other time and I might be able to make it happen, but Thursdays are out.

!SORRY!

It looks like we've got two or three people at Mall Of Ga. and the Clairmont Access Rd location. It looks like we'll need another person or two at the Perimeter store though.

Any volunteers?

Thanks,
erik

Thanks Trez!

I guess the next step might be to coordinate what we can present. I'm not sure how mtn-man did it at "his" REI last year but at the Clairmont store I started off with some GPS theory and then we did some demoing. It got a bit difficult as the building apparently had a metal roof and there was no GPS reception in the room. We had a mighty mouse remote antenna strung out to the loading dock, but that didn't work either since there was a truck backed up to the dock.

Brad (gpsfun) had brought in a video camera on a tripod that we connected to a TV they had there and had it focused on the GPS screen. Then I think we just ran thru the different screens and ran a simulation of sorts. After that it was mostly Q&A and the discussion went where the audience wanted it to go.

We got in a pretty good plug for geocaching since we used it to frame a lot of the practical discussions, but be aware that much of the audience will be more interested in hiking and camping. There were some questions we could not answer - like will the National Geographic topo software work with a GPS, but there were others in the audience who spoke up and shared what they knew. All in all it was fun. Hopefully we'll have geocachers at each meeting who are somewhat conversant about the different types of GPSs. I know my obsolete Garmin 12 MAP real well, but am weak on the Etrex line and wouldn't know how to turn on a Maggie. Wink

This is great that everyone has stepped up to volunteer! I did a sheet of bullit points for my deal last year. I will send it to Erik tonight when I get home and see if he can give some input. Once we get it touched up we can send it to trez and jmtbuzz for the perimeter store and then send it to the other volunteers so we will be on the same page.

Maybe we can meet a bit early at each of our stores to just go over things. The good thing about having more than one person is having the possibility of having more than one type of GPS! They only sell Garmins now, BTW.
