Since those who sign up for this class will theoretically be charged an entry fee for the new Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center I probably can't post this as an "event cache", but if you'd like to help out let me know. You obviously won't be charged.

GPS and Geocaching

Join Erik van Dyck of the Georgia Geocachers as he teaches you about Global Positioning Systems and introduces you to the exciting sport of geocaching. This class is available for ages 16 and up and is limited to 15 participants. Please register by emailing environmentalheritage@gwinnettcounty.com or call 770.904.3500.

So far six people have signed up, but there's almost another two weeks to go. I was planning to do some basic GPS instruction, then go hunt a series of temporary caches hidden off the hiking trails there. Brian Sterner has been an advocate for us there, and I'd like to support him with the class he's requested.

PS - I'll bribe you with a geocoin if you assist. Wink

And to see the guidelines for placing Geocaches in the 'Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center' visit:

Don't say you can't, say you'll try.

I'll be glad to help out. Would I need to bring my GPS for the class?

A little more info from Brian follows. I'd asked if the "class" part would be indoors or outdoors, since a GPS doesn't work too well indoords, and if he had GPS receivers for the participants.
quote:

I was planning on outdoors in a pavilion. If we have inclement weather and you would like to still do the program I can have a classroom with a window available. Our classroom also has a document camera and projector which should do the same things as your videocam-tv setup. I should be able to provide at least 4 garmin rinos and my little geko is available if needed. I should be able to find some things to put in some caches, once we get a little closer and see some registration numbers we can talk and figure how many we need. We should have plenty of room for your helpers whether we are indoors or out, and don't worry about admission for them.

I have a new GPS and three older ones. I was going to bring them all so I'd have one in my hand plus have the other three for participants to use.

Hi Erik,

What's the status on helpers for this? Do you still want/need an extra body?

Feel free to message me directly with information if you prefer.

Regards,

Mark (S-4-C)

I still plan on helping. I will be bringing my two magellans. If they are not needed, I'll just leave them in the truck.
