I went to a "lightweight backpacking" class at REI last night (great tips, like using Platypus "bottles" instead of lexan bottles). They handed out the May/June schedule and I was wondering if anyone needed help at:

>>>
Basics of GPS
Thurs, June 24th, 7:00 PM
REI Atlanta, Perimeter, Buford
This clinic will focus on what your GPS can do for you.
Join the Georgia Geocachers Association for this informative clinic on the basics of using the GPS technology to aid you in your outdoor adventures.
<<<

I didn't see a thread on this (well, the original thread seemed to devolve into a Fanta Shokata (sp?) festival), so if this has been discussed elsewhere, kindly markwell me.

Thanks- AndymanD

A topic has not been opened here, but now that we are about 30 days out I have been thinking about it. I was contacted about 45 days ago and the SC has discussed it.

I will need to get more input from the other SC members now that we are 30 days out. We should be able to plan our schedules better. I've been looking because I am about to get slammed and I have been trying to keep that date open (a Thursday night, FYI). I know we will want other volunteers once we see which one of us will do which store.

Any possibility of having one of these on a night other than a Thursday in the future? I'd like to help or even attend, but I'm unable to make it on Thursdays.

The classes are still scheduled for June 24th at 7:00p.m.. You can get details here.

So far the plan is for the following people to lead the instruction:

At MOG: GPSFun
At I-85: Mtn-man
At Perimeter: Trez003 and Trailerman

Anyone wanting to help or attend or just provide moral support, chime in. Post here or send the MC an email. Everyone is welcome!

Would love to have helped again but Ill be in Montgomery. A few months ago when I was at REI I noticed it was thursday and glanced at a GPS info sheet (I was buying a weather radio, so i read something while i waited on a sales person). I dont remember seeing a date but i walked back to the back room of the I-85 store and lo and behold theres mtn-man finishing up his talk. Small world. Nah not really. i just go to REi too much

Happy Hunting! Smile

Depending on the weather, I may actually be able to attend one of the sessions. Tonight we were supposed to have an outdoor service, but if the weather is any indication I expect that it will be a washout, pun intended.

Since we're supposed to be at Collins Hill Park tonight, I may show up at the MOG location if the rains come. It'll be the closest for me to come to.

I had a good class at the I-85 store. I think we will see a few future geocachers from the meeting. Too bad no GGA'ers showed up. There were some Yellow Jeeps there looking for a good home.

Well, the one person who showed up at the MOG location received the complete and undivided attention of both AndymanD and me.

I called the store in the afternoon to find out how many people they had signed up, as I wanted to bring an adequate supply of collateral. Surprise! No one at the store knew about the clinic, there were no signs posted, no sign up sheet, and I guess we were lucky to have the one person attend.

AndymanD left with our student to go for the REI at MOG cache. Before I could get out of the store, the bottom fell out and we had about 25 minutes of hard rain.

The store manager on duty assured me that she would follow up to find out how the ball got dropped.

Trez003 and I had a sellout crowd (about 5) plus the excellent support of Thorny1. Excellent support also from the store manager -- he actually remembered Trez's name! It wa fun and those in attendance were VERY interested! No Jeeps though.

And, how does the sensitive altimeter in the Garmin GPSMap 76S interface with the NAVSTAR altitude software? That's one of the questions I got tonight. These folks were INTERESTED! Laughing

Brad, sorry to hear that the store dropped the ball on that. We had a sell out crowd there the last time we did it, but I do recall picking up a flyer about it there the week before.

Thanks for doing this, though. Maybe your one student will become a convert to geocaching. Smile

Ouch Brad. Aw Nuts!

I had about 18 very interested people. It seems in the past I had the fewest.

Bruce was amazed at the camo technique you used on your REI at MOG cache and seemed to have at least a mild interest in joining the geocaching fun.

I learned something from the session. Brad mentioned that he uses MOB (man overboard) to mark a waypoint at his vehicle when he heads off to find a cache. I've always created a standard waypoint (e.g., wpt001) and then if/when I've found my truck, I erase said waypoint.

Well, an MOB waypoint is slightly easier to create (simply hold down the Goto or Find button until the MOB wpt pops up) and it saves a step, in that I can just keep recycling the old MOB waypoint for new parking locations.

How cool. Cool Thanks, Brad! -AndymanD
