Thanks Kenneth.

I also remember your offer to upgrade the firmware on their Magellan GPS units. I don't think I'll get a chance to get up there before the day of the first class, but if that's at all close to your home you might want to give Roanne or Cynthia a call about this. As I recall, we ended up not using their Magellans last year because they were set to use UTM coords and/or had low batteries.

However, the more GPS receivers we have the more there will be for the kids to use. I'd ask mtn-man to borrow his spare eTrex, but after last year he'd probably shriek. Wink

I'm not sure about attempting upgrades too close to the class as if there was any problems then we'd actually have less GPSRs.
Maybe I can coordinate with them to do it between the two classes.
Of course, I could try one and if it has problems, then back out and let them borrow mine.
Do you have Roanne and/or Cynthia's numbers for me to see if I can coordinate with them?
You can send it to me in a private message or email.

Kenneth

Erik:
Although I don't think I can make it to either session, you are more that welcome to use my spare ETrex if needed. Don't know how I could get it to you for the first session, but could bring it to the 'Snake Meeting' for your use at the second one.
Just lemme know.

Excellent idea and i wish I had thought about it first.

Erik, I have a spare (for now) Magellan SporTrak yellow that you are welcome to use for the second session. I'll bring it with me to the GGA meeting and can get it back from you at a time convenient for the two of us. Let me know if you need it.

Regards,

- Mark (S-4-C)

Yeah,
I'm sure we can use the spare GPS's. I was thinking about running out to buy a yellow ETrex or Geko for my daughter to use at the event. Or maybe this is an excuse to upgrade several quantum leaps beyond my GPS12 Map. Wink

This Friday is just working out too tough for me. I may be able to swing the 18th though. We are really busy at work, and I am off to Baltimore this weekend. I will bring a spare GPS to the snake show too in case I cannot make the 18th.

I spoke to Roanne, the camp director, today.

She said at this time it looks like turnout on the 4th will be pretty modest - only six or eight kids. She said she already had 14 signed up for June 18th, but it's looking like attendance in general is down from last year. That's fine with me. Smile

Well, if you're coming do bring them along.

In all honesty, I'm not sure you should fight Atlanta rush hour traffic to drive up from Macon if we're only going to have a handful of kids. If all those who live closer make it we'll have more than enough geocachers there.

Well I now know that I can't make it to the first class as they scheduled a server change at work that requires me to be there.

I also never got around to calling Elachee to ask them if they wanted me to upgrade the Magellans.

Erik, if you want to ask them for me tomorrow when you are face-to-face with them, then I can do the grunt work of upgrading them if they want it done.

That's a tough one to answer. Right now we've got five people listed for the 4th, three for the 18th. If it was the other way around I'd say it's perfect. Wink

A few general rules to keep in mind when adults are working with children: You don't want a child alone with several adults, you don't want kids alone with one adult. You definately don't want one child alone with one adult unless that adult is the parent. It's best if there are two or more adults leading two or more kids.

Unless there was an exception I missed, last year we had pairs of adults escorting groups of four to six kids. Honestly, the number of kids per group seemed a bit large in some cases, as you want the kids to be hands on with the GPS, not following someone else around.

So, with six to eight kids broken into two competing groups, and two geocachers per group, you'd want four in all. My daughter will be there, which brings the count to six if everyone shows up. Last year we also had a few parents and a few teenage camp councelors along.

Being selfish Wink it would be best for me if everyone showed up, but if not all were needed some could go off and look for nearby caches and/or leave early. But I realize everyone's time is valuable, so I won't make you feel too guilty if you don't make it. Wink

Well providing Cymbaline's Linex install goes well today in Orlando and he isn't required to stay an additional day, we'll be there. If you don't need us, it's just an excuse to cache in Gainsville Smile
