Still unable to attend, and now I'm not able to go to the GGA meeting! However, I'm sending my GPS to Erik by proxy, off sorts. Deadeye Dave will be bringing my Magellan yellow to you, Erik.
Sorry I can't come, but hopefully you'll be able to use the extra unit.
Regards,
- Mark (S-4-C)

Ah, a Maggie wheel chock. Wink

Just kidding, thanks! I did buy a second Garmin the day before the last session, but we're supposed to have more kids this time, so an additional unit might come in handy.

I got this today from the camp director at Elachee:

quote:
Erik and Catherine and all your wonderful Volunteers!

Our campers truly enjoyed their adventures with your group on Friday. I'm sure the memories and learned experiences will be something that they will take with them for many years .

Erik, we appreciate all that you do for Elachee and the children here. I'm looking forward to working with you again, perhaps on
the trails. Take care of you and yours!

Most Sincerely,

Roanne LaVere

I wanted to pass that on and again thank all those who helped out. I couldn't have done it without you!

Well I missed the summer school, but I still did my part (no smiley though Frown ).

This afternoon I met with Cythina Crotwell (Preserve Manager) and upgraded their Magellan Meridian Green GPSr units to the latest firmware (4.06).
One unit was on version 2.0x!
The reason for the upgrade was to get the units to where they could take advantage of SD cards for storage of waypoints.

Some background.
During last years GPS Summer School, I told Erik that I could put the waypoints for the hidden caches into my Meridian and pop out the SD card. I could then put it in Elachee's GPSr units and load the waypoints. This would minimize both time for entering the waypoints and potential for error.
However, the firmware on the units did not support the SD card.
I had hoped to upgrade them before the event this year, but did not get a chance to.

So the upgrades were successful.
I had downloaded the waypoints they had in the units, upgraded, and then uploaded the waypoints back.

I then spent another hour or so going over the newer features/settings and some uses for the GPSr units that they had not thought of before. I also did a demo of EasyGPS using their waypoints.
Cynthia seemed excited to be able to load the units with waypoints for different events/classes/etc that they have without having to have them all in the unit at once.
Also being able to have a backup of waypoints was a plus. They had a serial cable for the PC, but it was the wrong one. I loaned them my cable for a while as I use my SD card and reader/writer to manage my waypoints. (I'll be asking for spares that anyone wants to give away in the main forum)
Also mentioned was the idea of saving tracks of each of the trails at the nature center so they can put them on their website for visitors to download. Maybe even waypoints of interesting sites and hazards around the property.
We may be asking for volunteers to walk trails and save tracks when the tree cover diminishes in the late fall.

I want to say that Cynthia thinks very highly of the GGA and I applaude Erik and all the other members who have worked with Elachee in the past. Hopefully my work today (it was more fun than work) has added to the relationship. I think Elachee is my favorite caching location.

That's great Kenneth!

Thanks for what you did. I'm glad you like Elachee, as that's where our next geocaching challenge event is slated to be held. Wink

Hopefully in GPX format so that they can be loaded into other brands of GPS.

I did make sure she understood that they should use GPX or LOC files for compatibility with all GPS manufacturers. She agreed.
She was also interested in using GPX as she could put more details in the files for loading into a PDA (for visitors and also for volunteers/employees with logtype history).
I mentioned that GPX follows the XML format, but is geared for Geocaching mostly.
She understood this but filed the info away for later.

I gave her alot to think about and told her not to worry about the details for now.
When she gets to those things, I or another GGA member could work with her then.

Glad I could help.

I will second that motion, and give a thank you salute to Erik and all the others who have helped establish and maintain the relationship with Elachee. I have really enjoyed hiking all over Elachee looking for various geocaches, and I am looking forward to the challenge event there ... in the Fall?
